‘HALL OF FAME--Air Force fas exceptional QB in
Marty Louthan. If he gets blocking, the Falcons could
pull upset. Vandy much bigger and swifter. Whit Taylor
can hum ball and has the receivers...Vandy, 24-21.
PEACH BOWL-~-Speed vs. muscle here. Vols defense
porous and Coach Majors must keep Iowa offense on
sidelines. Field position most important. Two premier
punters in Hawks’ Reggie Roby (48.1) and Vols’ Jimmy
Colquitt (46.9). If Towa can knock Vols off ball lookout!
Like Vol QB Alan Cockrell. Vols have edge in field goals
with Fuad Reveiz, who has converted 8-10 over 50 yard-
s...Vols, 27-26.
BLUE BONNET--Depends on which Gator team takes
Brad Taylor must start fast. Coach Holtz is coaxing and
shaping for this one. Florida has some burners. Wilbur
Marshall and Billy Ray Smith lead respective defenses.
Gators, 16-13.
FIESTA--Home field advantage for Arizona State
coupled with reckless defense must rate favorite role,
right? Wrong, Sooners have some gamebreakers in
Stanley Wilson and Marcus Dupree. Gutsy QB Kelly
Phelps hardnosed. If Sooners firm up, pass defense
should prevail. ASU’s Mike Richards key from strong
safety. If he reads well could mean difference. Sooners,
27-23.
ROSE--Bad blood between these two coaches. UCLA’s
offensive line is key. If Bruins dominate up front, Big
Blue has no chance. QB Tom Ramsey is stellar per-
former with heap of scoring threats. Michigan led 21-zip
in regular season meeting, but Bruins, despite some
questionable calls from refs, rallied for r31-27 triumph.
Re-match is in Rose Bowl where Bruins happen to play
home games. Bruins again, 27-20.
SUGAR BOWL--Penn State vs. Hershal Walker: Two
teams that have made continued improvement game-to-
game. The key for PSU is stopping Walker on first down.
He's carried the ball 335 times this season, 100 have been
on first-and-ten. On 55 of these carries he busted loose for
10 yards or better. Dawgs run 80 percent of time. They've
won 33 of 35 games with Hershal. St. Joe is seeking initial
from the Firebirds with
win in Sugar. He’s 3-8 against SEC teams. For PSU to
win, QB Todd Blackledge must be on target. The of-
fensive line must move folks out and neutralize the
Dawgs’ blitzes. The Nittany Lions also must keep their
egos in check. They've already voted on the national
championship rings?
GEORGIA can win the football game. Dawgs must set
tempo of game early with QB John Lastinger throwing
effectively. They can’t be predictable. Defensive unit is
reckless and must pressure Blackledge into mistakes.
Dawgs defense has plus 21 takeaways while PSU has 17.
According to most coaches, both teams have benefited
from stripe-shirts’ calls and some that haven’t been
made.
PSU averages 5.6 yards per snap, while Georgia has
gotten 4.9 each time it has put the ball in play.
Both punters are excellent, while Georgia does have a
more consistent kicker in Kevin Butler and he’s got
range.

stronger Georgia team in last year’s Sugar...Penn State,
27-26.
COTTON BOWL--SMU vs. Pitt: The uncertainties
surrounding this game are too difficult to figure. Pitt has
an alleged collection of exceptional players that simply
never improved from last season. Pitt’s mental state is
so significant. If ready to play can beat the Ponies. If not,
then the Panthers could get caught in a stampede by the
“Pony Express.” !
For the Panthers to win they’ve got to take away the 2
option by QB Lance Mcllhenny. Second, they’ve got to
bottle up Eric Dickerson and Craig James and prevent
them from exploding into secondary. Special teams are
important, too. QB Dan Marino has to keep his poise and
take what is open and the receivers must hold on to the
ball.
SMU runs 81 percent of time and has only turned the
ball over 22 times which is low. The SMU attack is geared
around the above three which has accounted for 88 per-
cent of yards gained. McIlhenny has gunned 10 TDS and
is a big-play artist.
Another strength is SMU’s swiftness on defense from
its ends, linebackers and secondary. They’ll be the
quickest Pitt has met in sometime. SMU’s oppenents’
overall record is 38 percent won-loss which is suspect.
Watch defenders Russ Carter, Ardmore, Blane Smith
and LM Gary Moten. SMU hasn’t seen the likes of Marino
when he’s on either--SMU, 27-24.
ORANGE BOWL--Nebraska vs. LSU: Huskers just }
may have best club at present. QB Turner Gill's option
pass and precision type attack should offset LSU’s very
quick defense. Tigers LBs Al Richardson and Lawrence
Williams are big hitters. QB Al Risher is accurate
thrower and has bevy of runners. Husker secondary has
to be better than previous games or LSU can win.
Huskers have size and LSU size and exceptional quick-
ness. Nebraska, 29-17. yk
