Dallas Postmaster Bernard C. Gawlas is offering a few suggestions on preparing holiday packages for mailing. --Avoid using masking tape or cellophane tape to seal packages. They are not ' made for package wrapping. Use instead a nylon filament tape such as Scotch Strapping Tape to band packages and a pressure sensitive tape for the closures. --Avoid using twine or cord when wrapping boxes. The carton strands a great risk of being caught in a sorting machine, --Use ‘wrapping paper equivalent to the strength of the average grocery bag when wrapping is necessary. Otherwise, don’t use paper around the box if the container is strong enough by itself. --When writing the name, address and ZIP Code, use a smudgeproof ink and make the letters large enough to be read from a distance of 30 inches. (A handy trick is to cover the address in- formation with strips of clear transparent tape.) --Use strapping tape to encircle the package at least twice girthwise and lengthwise. Never use staples--they can cause injury to handling per- sonnel. --Cushion objects to prevent breakage and lateral shifting. This can be done by separating the items | with plastic shedding or excelsior. --Mail as possible. 1f you follow these guidelines and take a few extra steps in making sure your Christmas early as packages are mailable, the effort will help your parcel to arrive at its destination safe and sound,” said Postmaster Gawlas.
