tinues to serve the
community even in its
dismantling. Thanks to
the local chapter of a
national conservation
association, the Pennsyl-
vania Fish ‘Commission
and a local contractor,
tons of concrete debris
from the former tannery
will prevent erosion along
' the fly-fishing stretch of
Bowman's Creek.
The Endless Mountains
Chapter of Trout
Unlimited * provided the
money to pay for hauling
concrete sections from
the tannery’s floor and
foundation to be used in
the. bank repair project.
The Noxen Tannery was
torn down last spring.
The project was one in a
series carried out ‘along
Bowman’s Creek by Trout
Unlimited as part of the
Fish Commissions
‘‘Adopt-A-Stream’’ pr-
ogram. The group
adopted the Bowman’s
Creek project in 1975
when they formed.

ways patrolman for
Wyoming County, con-
ceived the latest
operastion when he saw
trucks hauling material
from the tannery’
demolition site.
Both Shabbick and

for several years about
erosion along the farm
property of James Brodie.
Each spring, high water
took a little more of the
bank in an area along
Route 29 near the inter-
section’ with Route 292.
While fishing was not yet
affected, the hole in the
bank was quite severe,
explained Trout
Unlimited secretary
Richard Mills of Lehman.
Appeals to the Soil
Conservation of the U.S.
Department of Agri-
culture and the Pennsyl-
vania Department of
Environmental = Resou-
rces had gone unan-
swered and members
believed that a valuable
fishing area would be lost.
Shabbick organized the
project. He contacted
offices of Trout Unlimited
John Connolly and Sons of
about his idea.
The conservation
organization agreed to
pay for the hauling and
the contractor began
dumping fill at the
streamside where it was
put in place under the
supervision of Shabbick
and Trout Unlimited
members. ‘It was a
massive job,” said Mills.
The group had to include
DER in its planning, as
Management people.
Within four days in mid-
July the bank was
secured.
Shabbick believes the
bank is now stabilized and
he predicts many more
years of successful fishing
in the area in the popular
trout stream.
Endless Mountain
Chapter of Trout
Unlimited has contributed
both time and money to
improve fishing in the
waters of Bowman’s
Creek.
In several locations,
members have built
ripraps to stabilize banks
and have planted hun-
dreds of willow seedlings
to hold bank soil. The
group also has introduced
more than 100,000 brown
trout fingerlings into the
stream. These were pur-
chased through the Sugar
Hollow Hatchery, allowed
to hatch and set free into
the waters in a program
spanning three years.
The local chapter of
Trout Unlimited is one of
250 in the United States.

James Hoyson, Kingston,
vice president; and Mills,
Lehman, = secretary-tr-
easurer. Membership
presently numbers about
