Saab put the first turbocharger into its automobiles back in 1977, when
turbos were still considered quite a breakthrough for everyday driving. Finally,
a small engine could deliver high performance.
Car manufacturers naturally seized on the idea, and now you can have
your pick of turbocharged automobiles. All of which have small engines that
deliver high performance.
But while the others were still working on these first generation turbos,
Saab had designed a second. A turbo that not only delivers beter performance
than its predecessor, but does so on less gas.
The trick—another Saab innovation, incidentally—is Automatic Perfor-
mance Control. This is a device that automatically adjusts turbo boost as you
drive, to keep it at optimum efficiency. The result is a 10% increase in torque, an
11% increase in mileage, and a 0-60 mph time that’s a full second faster
