Noxen looking for turn
By Mike Polk
Prominent civic leaders
of Noxen Township are
looking forward to a ‘turn-
around’ in that com-
munity’s progress
following the demolition
of the former Noxen
Tannery. The Tannery,
closed since 1953, is a
group of dilapidated
buildings that has been a
‘community blight’ the
last two decades.
Demolition is ten-
tatively scheduled to
begin next month.
Representatives of 15
northeastern Pennsyl-
vania firms have shown
interest in acquiring the
demolition contract since
the authority advertised
last month for bidders. A
pre-ward conference was
held last Tuesday in
Tunkhannock and the
authority expects to
receive in the neigh-
borhood of 10 actual
proposals for the
domolition.
Proposals on the cost of
the demolition will be
opened in the Wyoming
County Redevelopment
and Housing Authority
offices on Route 309,
Eaton Township, Friday
morning at 11.
Federal Department of
Housing and Urban
Development (HUD) has
awarded the Wyoming
County Redevelopment
Authority a grant of
$50,000 for the tannery’s
demolition. Raising the
priority for the Wyoming
County Redevelopment
Authority for more than a
year because the Housing
Authority plans to con-
struct a low-to-moderate
housing project on a
portion of the site when
the demolition is com-
pleted.
According to plans
discussed at last week’s
meeting of the Wyoming
County Authority, were
tentative plans for the
housing project presented
by Thomas Kearns of Von
Storch & Kearns, an
architectural firm of
Clarks Summit, for a 16-
unit apartment building.
The Clarks Summit firm
is designing the housing
project. Proposal sub-
mitted by Kearns includes
nine two-bedroom
apartments, six three-
bedroom apartments and
a two-bedroom apartment
to accommodate
physically handicapped
residents.
Some elements of the
Kearns’ proposal on
construction materials to
be used were questioned
and the architectural firm
agreed to reconsider
those parts of the ten-
tative plans. John Martin,
executive director of the
Wyoming County
Redevelopment and
Housing Authority, hopes
the final plans on the
housing project will be
completed quickly so that
plans can be submitted to
for the housing project
also will come from HUD.
The Housing Authority
awarded a contract for
$990 to James Walton,
Laceyville surveyor, for a
topographic survey of the
housing project site. The
topographic survey,
Martin said, must be

Sallie's most exciting time of the year is nearing — Easter. She
now can release all her new bump chenille bunnies. Classes
will be taught on these adorable credtures. Come in and talk
to her, she'll be glad to get you going on your own bunny hutch.
Wait until you see her giant “Peter Cottontail”.
Scott is back to his favorite craft — Pom Poms. His latest is a
takeoff on Smurf. He also did a really pretty ribbon rainbow.
For St. Patrick's Day the lighted shamrocks for your front window
have been selling so fast Scott can’t keep up with his orders.
My Grandmother, Lottie, has been working day and night to
price all the new Spring flowers, ribbons, Annalee rabbits,
baskets and Easter novelties that have been coming into the
shop. Along with our full line of Pysanky Egg supplies, we have
in stock the Polish willow baskets in which to carry your tradi-
tional foods and eggs to church.
There are craft classes assembling at Luzerne County Community
College and Kingston Recreation Board that Delores will be
teaching this semester. Call the offices of the two locations to
find out how you can sign up.
Young and old girls alike love the barrettes made from satin
ribbon and beads. We will soon have almost every color made
in the ribbon for you to design your own “fashion barrettes”.
A potpourri class will be held at the store on March 18. Potpourri
is the blending of oils and flowers to make lovely scented
sachets and home accessories. Call for further information.
