) aR BY MIKE POLK Dwight Barbacci Dwight Barbacci of Noxen began duties as instructor of elementary physical ed at the Lake- Noxen grade school last week. He is a graduate of Lake-Lehman High School and received “his bachelor’s degree in physical ed in June from Lock Haven State College. At Lock Haven, Barbacci was a member of the varsity baseball team for four years at the second base spot. Dwight also is active in sports in the Back Mountain. He played with the Back Mountain Hawks in baseball -and cavorted at the second base spot for the Noxen Rebels in the Back Mountain Slo-Pitch Softball League. Dwight also is one of the ‘Big Three’ arranging the fifth annual Noxen Rebels softball tourney, which will be played this week end at Noxen. The Back Mountain Youth Soccer league’s Division I (7 to 9 year olds) completed its third week of play Saturday with shut out victories being posted by the Roughnecks, the Surf, and the Kicks; while the Timbers and Whitecaps scored one goal victories in tight contests. In Division II (10 and 11 year olds) play Saturday, the Tornadoes, the Sounders, and the Tim- bers blanked their op- ponents; © while the Whitecaps squeaked by Tigers When the Tunkhannock Tigers opened their 1981 high school - football season Friday evening at Tunkhannock against Mid-Valley, Mike Ondish of Centermoreland and Bob Gillespie of Vernon had varsity spots on the Tigers’ squad. Ondish is one of four co-captains of the Tiger ‘11’ and is in his fourth year of varsity football at Tunkhannock Area. He tips the scales around 165 and is just shy of six feet. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ondish. Gillespie’s return as a varsity man at Tunkhannock is a per- sonal success story in determination. Injured early during the 1980 grid season, Gillespie was told by three doctors that he would never be able to play football again. But through personal effort and some of that ‘never the Chiefs 3-2° and the Surfs and Cosmos battled to a 2-2 tie. In week-night play, the Sounders, Surfs, Tornadoes, Timbers, and Roughnecks all scored victories. DIVISION I--7 to 9 YEAR OLDS Mike DePolo’s goal mid-way through the fourth quarter put the first time in a tight game with “ the Chiefs. Kiwanians lose For those area fans who follow the Back Mountain Kiwanis softball squad - the team was eliminated from further competition in the Kopko tourney on Saturday, losing to" the Adams Family by a 5 to 3 score on the Coal Street no.4 diamond. It was Kiwanis’ second loss in the double eliminations tourney. Galka bats 500 Sally Galka, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Galka of Noxen, had a 600 batting average with Finn’s Rebels in softball. Sally, who starred on the softball and basketball opened the scoring on a pass from Pat Morris and Bill Gauntlett tied the Tomaine scored again in the third quarter, but the Timbers’ Stephen Gregor answered with a penalty kick to knot the score 2-2 and set up DePolo’s goal. The Roughnecks rolled over the Aztecs 5-0 with all the goals being provided by Aaron Tillman’s three goals and Rob Miroslaw’s two. Goals by Eric Pac- zewski and Maggi Manzoni gave the Surf a 2- teams at Lake-Lehman High during her high school days, left on Sunday to begin her junior year at Lock Haven State where’ she is pursuing studies for a bachelor’s ‘degree in physical ed. Softball popular in Back M t. Many of the Back Mountain Area’s softball * players just can’t seem to get enough of the sport. A quartet of Back Mountain players are members of Leo’s A. C., which is entered in the Businessmen’s Fall Softball League in Wilkes- Barre. The league plays its games on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Coal Street and Morgan B. ‘Williams Parks in Wilkes- Barre. Area players on ‘the squad include Carl Derhammer, who is a pitcher; Mike Sutton at shortsop; John Doziak at second base and Bob 0 victory over the Strikers. The Kicks downed the Sounders 3-0 with Frank Shray scoring twice and Mike Farris once. In the day’s other close match, the Whitecaps edged the Cosmos 2-1 as Brian Hampel scored the decisive goal. = Jason Popeck scored the Cosmos goal and Mike Fino provided the other tally for the Whitecaps. DIVISION II--10 and 11 YEAR OLDS Cosmos kicked off Saturday’s action with a 2-2 tie. Tyler Wilson and Brian Zupko scored for the Surfs and Scott Schaffer and Paul Malone scored for the Cosmos. The Tornadoes downed the Roughnecks 2-0 on goals by Tom Shane and Judy Wilson. Hugh Mundy’s hat trick and Jim Lister’s single tally propelled the Sounders to a 4-0 Whitewash of the The Timbers defeated the Kicks 5-0 as Dale Root Widener at the right center field spot. The team won its opener last week, 7 to 3, beating the Pittston Local-Yokels. Leo View is the team sponsor. The league plays a 10-game schedule on Wednesday evenings. Church League Back Mountain Church Bowling League opened its 1981-82 season Thursday evening at Bonomo’s Lanes with 12 teams rolling the pins. The league is one of the oldest bowling loops in the Back Mountain.
