A daughter is an em- barrassing and ticklish possession. --Menander. 200 Ho Rs @ ® / & Five year-old Erica Rojas sat on the bed surrounded by Barbie dolls and their extensive wardrobe. Absorbed in her play Erica gave no indication that she was the topic of conversation. “She’s quite shy when she first meets people,” said Mrs. Robert (Carol) Eyet of Lower Demunds Road, Dallas. “1 talked to her mother by phone last evening and she assured me that in a day or so Erica would show no trace of shyness.” Dark-haired, dark-eyed Erica is a Puerto Rican child from the Bronx, one of the 18 Fresh Air children, who arrived by bus in the Back Mountain last Wednesday. Ranging in age from five to 14 years, the 12 girls and six boys will be guests of 12 area families until Aug. 16, when they will return to the city. Carol Eyet is Dallas Area chairman of the Fresh Air Program sponsored by the Dallas Junior Woman's Club. “1 know the Woman's Club has sponsored the program for a good many years,” said Carol, “exactly how many I'm not sure but I took over the program three years ago when I was president of the Dallas Juniors. alternates for this year’s summer University, Judy Solack, GAR; Susie Webster, Ritts, Bishop O'Reilly; Patricia WITH “The women who worked with the program prior to that time had moved up to the Dallas Senior Women. Arrangements for the children used to. be done by telephone but I found it easier and more informative to send letters explaining the project.” Carol explained that families hosting children for the first time were required to fill in an ap- plication form. For those families who have hosted children in previous years, it is much easier. Many of the families have the same children back each year. “One lady has taken the same boy for the past three years. This year she and her husband also requested a four-year-old. They also visit their children’s family in New, York. “The first time the children come to this area, they stay only two weeks; those returning for the second or third time often stay four weeks. This time two of the children will stay for a month: Some of the older children come in by bus at different times. These are not in- cluded among the 18, who are here now,” said Carol. “My family was surprised when I came home with Erica,” said Carol. “Because my daughter, Sharon, and my sons, Lee and Robert, are session of the Penn- West Hazleton; Lynn Lane. Tunkhannock teenagers and I work most of the day, I did not plan to host one of the children. However, there was some mix-up with three children scheduled for one family so rather than disappoint a five-year-old, I brought Erica home to stay with us. “We have a bit of communication problem since Erica speaks Spanish when she wants something. She understands English and so far we have been able to know what she is saying through a lot of gestures and some lucky guesses. None of us know any Spanish at all. I'm sure Erica will speak English within a day or two. “She likes Sharon and is very good with Le but she is very quiet.” Carol said that the club has had no bad experiences during the years they have sponsored the program, nor have there been any accidents. The Fresh Air Program has been in existence for more than 100 years. are well screened. Children with handicaps or police records are not accepted in the program. The club is always looking for families interested in hosting one or more of the children. If interested contact Carol Eyet now for next year. Mr. and Mrs. W.
