WILKES-BARRE FATS
by Lee L. Richards
Lake-Lehman’s football team has lost some tough
games before, but Saturday night’s loss to the Mohawks
of Meyers, 22-15, was a heartbreaker.
The Knights had the Mohawks on the ropes and
couldn’t put them away. This has been a problem with
the Black and Gold for the past couple of years. If Lake-
Lehman was going to beat Meyers, this was the year.
I thought the Knights were physical enough up front,
but they appeared sort of confused by Meyers’ man-in-
motion, especially when backs would come out of the
backfield.
When Lehman took the lead 15-8 they were in position
to put the Mohawks lights out. Meyers ran the ensuing
kickoff back for a score when several of the Lehman
defenders over-converged and left their lanes.
Coach Tom Hisiro’s club showed some varied offensive
formations and Jim Michaels didn’t do a bad job running
the team. Wayne DeCesaris showed some excellent
moves and a fine pair of hands. Jim Hurley ran well.
Dave Jenkins, Ed Lozo and Barry Boltz did some heavy
blocking in the middle.
Defensively, Mike Leskowsky made some crisp tackles
from his LB position against the run, but Lehman’s LBs
appeared to have problems taking deep drops on the
Meyers passing game. Tony Langston applied some
pressure from his defensive end spot. Bill Lamoreaux
and Ed Parsons got their share of hits, too.
Meyers clearly hooked and held Lozo on its two-point
conversion attempt but the refs never saw it. That was
THE critical play of the contest.
However, Lehman didn’t make the big play when it
was needed and consequently came up on the short end of
the score. I saw enough to feel the Knights will win some
football games.
CLIPBOARD NOTES: Meyers 85-yard kickoff return
wasn’t a fluke. Coach Mickey Gorham is a stickler for
according to Mohawk sources...Dallas is attempting to
get acclimated to Coach Ron Rybak’s new offense and
managed to edge O'Reilly, 6-zip. Dallas had some heavy
hitters on defense.
Lake-Lehman’s shotgun formation didn’t catch the
Mohawks off guard. They were sort of surprised the first
two playes, but adjusted their defense accordingly...Jim
Michaels did catch Meyers with a third down quick
kick...Here’s how we see the Top Five teams: 1-Coughlin,
2-Valley West, 3-GAR, 4-Wyoming Area, 5-Nanticoke
Area.
Congratulations to Arch Austin on winning the Class C
club championship at Irem C.C. Bob Bauer took the D
Division...Tom Reese canned a hole-in-one on the 17th at
Irem when he laid an eight iron shot right on the green
and the ball rolled off the side hill into the cup. He was in
the foresome foursome with Bob Valatka, Bob Mason
and Jack Mascioli. When Jack spotted the ball in the hole
he asked Reese, ‘What type ball are you playing?”
Carmen Maffei, district magistrate in West Pittston,
recently attended the World Cup Games in Canada.
Carmen is an avid track buff and is planning on attending
the Olympic games in Russia next summer...I’m curious
to see how long the Rams will go before making a
coaching change?
Scott Burnside took in some of the action last week at
the U.S. Open tennis tourney. He couldn’t believe how: the
pros have so“much control and power with-their shots.
Wonder how the experts would react should the Reds
win it all without Pete Rose? Phillies had better start
dreaming up some new slogans for bumper stickers for
next year.
Speaking of the Phillies, why give Danny Ozark the
hook now? If you're going to dump a manager-why wait
until the season is just about over?
Sophomore Todd McCarroll won top definsive linemen
award for the Knights. He did some popping... When Boltz
went down with ankle sprain, Jeff Drugotch came in and
snapped the ball very well...Coach Hisiro indicated he
hopes to have more stability in secondary in the coming
to coach in schoolboy ranks.
again this season. Solid hitting and no chuckers appears
to be the case...After all that has been written about
Bishop Hoban’s football team, I wasn’t at all impressed
against GAR.
Coach John Rowlands Grenadiers took it to Hoban late
and dominated the action down the stretch. Hoban will be
lucky to win a handfull of games at best.
After checking over Penn State’s opponents I’ve got a
hunch only four teams have enough talent to really ex-
tend the Lions. Texas A&M, Nebraska, N.C. State and
Pitt have enough good athletes to challenge, Nebraska
has the best chance to beat PSU.

Smith's election
represents an historic
moment for Kiwanis. The
incoming President has
followed in the footsteps
of his father. The late
Mark Smith, Sr., "also
served as Kiwanis
President during the 1940-

This marks the first time
