Richards CLIPBOARD NOTES: Bob ‘Lefty’ Rogers always manages to play his way into the chips in golf events at Lehman. He's one of those guys that never talks about his handicap. We wonder why? --When we confronted Charlie Preece about his team coming in first last weekend at Irem he claims it was the first prize money he’s won in a long time. Another man running around with too many shots? --Dallas baseball fans grumbling again about the poor condition of the field and the fact the youngsters have been forced to practice in the parking lot for most of the spring. It appears the lack of interest in athletics con- tinues at Big D Country? Several college grid coaches recruiting through the state of Ohio for next season informs us the Buckeye state will have an abundance of talented gridders. It will be better than the 1979 crop which had around a dozen All- Americans. O v board members has urged them to develop a plan for a state wide football playoff system. ‘A plan should be developed and implemented immediately for a PIAA football championship’’, he says. “There can be little credence given to the philosophy of playoffs in other sports and none in football. “The interest of football, statewide, is the greatest of all our sports, and these participants deserve their efforts to culminate in a championship.” Bravo, Charlie! We've been saying we need a state playoff system since 1967. Pennsylvania athletics is falling behind each year because of a lack of foresight by the PIAA. --Penn State mat coach Rich Lorenzo is still in the thick of recruiting. We talked with Rich on the phone last week and he hopes to sign several champs from New Jersey and New York in the next couple of weeks. He's lost a couple of good ones to Oklahoma and Iowa. --Bob Zagorsky, the sweet-swinging golfer from Leh- man, will be on the shelf for the next 10 weeks or so with a broken leg. He's going to miss playing golf and we hope he’s back on his feet in time for the Potentate’s Golf Tourney. Bob and John Kennedy usually play tee it up in together. --Jim Brace has been showing off his new green hat from the Masters Golf Tourney. --How’s this for hitting high drives? For kicks last Sunday we had Ed Rome belting some high long drives on various tees for us. His hang time on some was 8.9 seconds. The pokes went pretty far, too. --We’ve learned one lesson about golf. Never lend a putter to an opponent. We made the mistake of lending a bit heavier blade to Scott Burnside and he dropped in a three-footer on the final hole to beat us in a match. He wound up buying the putter later. Scott didn’t want to know how the putter worked, but if I'd ever given it one of those little tosses? We'll never tell. --Will the cry around ther NHL be ‘break up the Rangers?’ They are amazing thus far in the Stanley Cup. Happened to watch Boston take a shafting in the final game of the semis against the Canadiens. They had the “Lords’’ of hockey down 3-1 in the final period, but two questionable calls set up power play goals and the NHL champs prevailed in OT. The stripe. shirts played a significant role in deciding the outcome in the game. Montreal sure gets a lot of things in its favor? . --We hope the Philly scribes and the Flyers took note of whipped by the Rangers. No excuses even though they were a big favorite entering the playofffs. Philly scribes keep digging up excuses and toss around snide remarks about Coach Fred Shero. One thing about Shero, he has too much class for the Keith Allen, Flyers’ GM, to accept. * --For what it’s worth, Lehigh appears to have pulled off the top recruiting year in wrestling in the East. Coach Thad Turner has three gems in Tom Bold ard Rich Santoro of Bethlehem Catholic and Jim Reilly, a national prep school champ from Germantown Academy. Bold and Santoro are PIAA champs. One of our pals. from the Lehigh camp informed us the Brown & White will have a better dual team next season! --I’'m curious as to why more of the top-notch roundball players from around the east haven't accepted scholar- ships from Penn State? Dick Harter is an outstanding coach in my book and he’s going to put the Nittany Lion program in the limelight in a matter of time. A super star in the PSU program is going to wind up a legend if he’s got any kind of smarts. --Speaking of roundball, Providence’s Dave Gavitt has been pushing for a new league between the Friars, St. John’s, Syracuse and Georgetown. They tried to convince Temple to join them but the Owls refused. That would have been a most competitive loop. I like the way Georgetown plays. --Our quote of the week comes from Ranger Coach Shero. When asked to compare this Ranger squad with his 1974 Flyers, Shero replied, ‘That was so long ago I can’t remember.” Keep 'em guessing Coach. --The NBA has done it again. They conned Michigan State’s “Magic” Johnson into going hardship and passing up his final two years with the Spartans. Then you wonder why we have no interest in NBA? It’s a garbage rule and a loop which is loaded with inflated egos. Johnson has been ill-advised, too. But I guess you've got to go where the dollars are today. 4 NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that Let- ters of Administration have been granted to EVA TRESCOTT, R.D.
