1977 FESTIVAL OF MUSIC The 1977 Festival of Music , sponsored by the Dallas Know Your Neighbor Shalom singer 1 was 76 Kiwanis winner “Back Mountain residents who have heard the Shalom folk singers. of Gate of Heaven Church, Dallas, are probably familiar with Mary Gabriel Hession. They certainly should be for she has been a member of the singers for eight years. Although she now attends Mansfield State College, she plays and sings with them when she is home. The daughter of Carol and Paul Hession of Oak Hill, Dallas, Mary first be- came interested in music at the age of nine when she received a guitar as a birthday gift. She joined the Shalom - group after studying music with Dr. Alfred Camp and during the eight years with them before graduating from high school, per- formed for numerous weddings and banquets. She also appeared on the program of various social and civic meetings. Mary appeared on local tele- ‘vision and also made a record ‘This Is The Day’. A talented instrumentalist and vocal- ist, she performed with the Bishop O’Reilly Chorus and stage band. : In 1976, Mary won the ° grand prize at the Dallas Kiwanis Annual Festival of Music in the high school popular music category. . That same year she enter- tained railroad hobbyists on the D&H annual train trip from Wilkes-Barre to Oneonta, N.Y. A music education vocal major at Mansfield, study- ing under Kathryn Dyck, she is a member of the freshman chorus, opera workshop and the Christian Ministry folk group. Her goal is to become a high school choral director. Although only a fresh- man in college, Mary is a talented guitarist and has been teaching private lessons to children nine years of age and up for the past five years. She also has been a teacher with the Back Mountain Cultural Center for three years. While she is home during the summer this year, she again plans to offer guitar Kiwanis Club, marks the 11th in a series that began in 1967, initiated by a suggestion from Kiwanian Robert “Maturi.
