Football season has
finally arrived. Now we
get into our favorite sport.
For the next couple of
weekends we’ll be covering
college games at West
Point for our pal Hershcel
Nissenson of Associated
Press while he’s off to
handle Pitt-Notre Dame
and Ohio State-Penn State.
Meanwhile, things don’t
look too promising for the
Dallas grid fortunes. From
reports we’ve received the
attitude is not conducive to
winning’ games and
championships. Granted
Coach Jack Jones has a
host of green people, but
they appear to lack that
dedication which winners
In discussing the team
with Coach Jones, he said
he was not at all pleased
with his players’ progress
Said Jones, ‘If we fail to
execute on offense ‘and
defense, Hanover could
kick our tails all over the
last week, but they aren’t
that bad of a team. We've
lacked cofisistency on
offense, while defensively,
we just aren’t aggressiv

Glad to see Lake-
Lehman finally win a
squeeker for a change.
Maybe Coach Rich
Gorgone’s luck has
changed. Lake Lehman
showed some heart coming
back against Northwest.
The Rangers were tougher
than many thought.
Dallas Coach Jones not
only got a chance to look at
this week’s opponent,
Hanover, but at GAR, too.
He has nothing but praise
for the Grenadiers, saying,
“They can play with any
team in the state.”
Ted Marchibroda, who
used to coach the
Baltimore Colts, is one of
the finest football coaches
we've ever encountered.
We’ve been out with Coach
Marchibroda, socially,
several times. He's very

Last year while at the
annual college grid
coaches convention in
Washington, we had
several pro assistants in
our room for a little bull
session.
John Mazur of the Eagles
had invited them and Ted
the call from Thomas.
Even the college coaches
had nothing but bad things
to say about Thomas--and
the pro coaches hate his
guts. They hoped he’d
leave Ted run his own
show. Thomas is supposed
to have built the Colts,
Vikings and Dolphins.
According to the guys in
the know, it’s a bunch of
crap! !
Ed Rome scooped up two
souvenir baseballs at Shea
Stadium last Saturday
when the Mets did in the
fading Phillies. Ed said
there were some sparkling
plays in the field and two
well-hit homers by Dave
Kingman and Mike
Schmidt.
Speaking of the Phillies,
we had a lot of respect for
manager Danny Ozark, but
after his childish
comments regarding the
Cincinnati Reds last
Monday, he belongs back in
the Bush League.
While we’re a Pittsburgh

get excited over

be a crime if the Phils blow
the flag after playing so
well all season, but it would
serve some of those Philly
scribes right for writing
about beating the Reds in
the playoffs and going on to
face the Yankees. You
don’t mouth off until you've
won, baby!
We'd like to know how
many football games Joe
Namath has started and
won for Jets?
Here’s © ‘our :' NFL
predictions--and if you'll
recall we told you last year
it would be Cowboys and
Steelers in the Super Bowl.
Well this year we're going
with the Dolphins, Steelers
and Raiders in AFC. Wild
Card is a toss up between
Oilers and Bengals. Both
have tough schedules.
NFC is Cowboys,
Vikings, and Rams. Wild
Card goes to Redskins on
toss of coin over the Cards,
who have yet to win a
playoff game in two
straight tries. :
It’s obvious New
England will miss Jim
Plunkett. They can thank
the idiot Boston fans for
that bum trade.
CLIPBOARD NOTES:
From reports received last
week, both Pitt and
Maryland will enter
opening games this week

some of its top-notch
players. Pitt is hurting
offensively with Elliot

limping around. Without
these two running backs,

On our visit to Johnstown
last weekend, as the guest
of Coach Bobby Roper, we
were mighty impressed
with the Pitt football team.
They are low-key. The
coaches felt they were
behind a bit compared to
this time last year, but the
players’ attitude was
something special. They
know they are faced with a
big challenge, being so
highly ranked, expected to
post a winning record and
get into a major bowl.

concerned only with
