Rebars

“Charming, intelligent
and beautiful are three
adjectives describing Alex
Rebar, Jr. and his lovely
wife Cloudia Bassett, who
are relaxing on the Rebar’s
Farm in Lehman.
As I spoke with this
| handsome couple, I
i“couldn’t help but feel the
sexcitement that surrounds
Ythem. It’s like a cloud that
_envelopes them and
radiates to anyone in their
company, for I felt right at
ithome whether speaking of
“their living in Italy, touring
Europe or the crime rate in
big cities.
Alex, known to us as
“A.J.” is the son of Alex
and Annette Rebar, which
makes him an honorary
resident of the Back
Mountain, even though he
was born and raised in
Plymouth.
After attending Valley
Forge Military School and
graduating from Plymouth
High School, A.J. joined
the United States Navy
where he continued his
education ‘at Ventura
College and Serbonne
University, Paris. Along
with history, French,
sociology and the basics,
he learned the guitar and
piano which eventually
became his livilihood-at
least for awhile.
After his naval tour of
duty, A.J. began a vacation
in France which evolved
into a two year stay when
he joined a rock group. The
group toured Beligium,
France, Germany,
Yugoslavia Italy, Swit-
zerland, and Holland.
If that wasn’t exciting
enough, during a short visit
to Italy, Alex met
acquaintances who were
associated with the foreign
film industry.
They introduced him,
during one of his leisure
moments, to the art of
dubbing foreign film into
|
English. Eventually, A.J..
realized that not only did
dubbing offer him in-
teresting enjoyment, but
that it was a very fertile
field for someone willing to
expend his time and
energy.
Being an enterprising
individual A. J. pursued
and established a one-man
company and reaped the
very lucrative rewards of
the movie business.
Since then he has worked
with Rod Steiger, Carol
Baker, Rod Taylor, Ceasar
Romaro, Gig Young and
Charlotte Rampling,
among others.
Among the most exciting
of Alex’s adventures was
his meeting the young
vibrant Cloudia Bassett,
who later became Mrs.
Rebar, Jr.
Cloudia, a very ac-
complished set and scene
television industry, is
currently - employing her
Hollywood talents,
‘Rhoda’, starring Valerie
Harper. Her avante-garde
creations are also seen in
“Mannix’’, ‘Police Story’
and many commercials,
including the famous
Friskie advertisement and
the G.A.F. ad with Henry
Fonda.
Cloudia related the true
drama and anxieties that
occur in the filming of T.V.
series which begin on
Monday rehearsal and
ends with a Friday
presentation to a live
audience.
Scripts, scenes, settings,
lighting, all are subject to
continuous changes until
no one is sure they are
performing the original
show. The constant
challenges must be met
and over-come in the rush
to provide viewers with a
finished product that rates
among the top ten T.V.
shows. (I would never have
dreamed that Valerie
Harper’s very natural
appearing performance,
could be so strenuous and
nerve wracking.)
Prior to becoming Mrs.
Rebar in 1968, Cloudia was
living in Rome designing
sets for movies. Among her
films were ‘‘Honey Pot”,
starring Rex Harrison,
Cappucini and Susan
Hayward, and ‘‘Buana
Sera Mrs. Campbell” with
Gina Lollabrigida Peter
Lawford and Telly Savales.
Following her
graduation from Hunter
College and Pratt Institute,
New York, Cloudia at-
tended the College of
London and the State
College of Rome where she
enrolled in graduate
courses in theater lighting,
setting and design.
AJ. and Cloudia spent
eight years of their
married life living in sunny
Italy and have only
recently returned to- the
United States with their pet
- a Roman alley cat named
“Goobie.”’
The Rebars will soon
return to Hollywood where
Cloudia will continue with
her ‘talents and Alex will
expand his business of
dubbing.
So when your favorite
television show or movie
film comes to an end and
the screen is covered with
names of producers,
directors and so on. Look
for the names Alex Rebar,
Jr. and Cloudia Bassett
