“We fumbled twice and
set up their touchdowns.”
That was Lake-Lehman
Coach Rich Gorgone’s
summation of his team’s
Monday evening loss to a
tbig Nanticoke team. The
Knights eleven, ending in a
17-14 Knight defeat.
The loss moved the
Knights to 1-2 on the year.
They meet Bishop O’Reilly
at Lake-Lehman Saturday
afternoon.
Nanticoke began the
Monday evening scoring in
the first quarter after
Lake:Lehman gave up the
‘ball on a fumble. At first it
appeared that the Knights
defense, which has been
the team’s mainstay all
year, would hold. But the
home team tried a
desperation halfback
option pass on fourth down
and the bigger receiver
outjumped the Knight
defender to catch the ball
and put Nanticoke on the
scoreboard.
Trailing 7-0 in the second
quarter, the Knights came
alive: on good runs by
Quarterback Chris
Yanchik and Running Back
Mark Kalish. Chris
Yanchik then scored on an
option and his twin Craig,
split the uprights to tie the
score, 7-7.
The Knight dotense held
the Nans again in the
quarter then put together a
strong 86 yard drive,
depending primarily on
quick drives and option

runs to harrass a
Nanticoke defense which
was effectively rushing the
Knight’s passing attack.
Again, it was Chris
Yanchik who crossed the
goal line for the visitors
this time on a bootleg.
Craig Yanchik again added
the point after and the
Knights led their hosts, 14-
7.
The advantage was short
lived. With a minute-and-
one half left in the first
half, a Knight receiver
dropped a Nanticoke punt.
The home team capitalized
on the miscue with a razzel-
dazzle halfback’ to
quarterback pass which
advanced the ball to the
Lake-Lehman 10 and
Nanticoke just before the
half ended to tie the score.
Gorgone said he felt his
team ran the ball well in
the first half, accumulating
near 200 yards rushing
during the period.
“But they dominated us
in’ the second half,” the
coach said. “They wore us
down with their size. We
wouldn’t let them score
offensively we just didn’t
get the ball a lot.”
In the third period, Pete
field goal to give Nanticoke
the victory edge, 17-14.
Defense by both teams took
control of the game from
then on...although the
Nanticoke offense had
considerably more success
moving the ball than did
the Knights.
What does Gorgone
expect from O’Reilly this
Saturday?
“They're a downright
physical team,” he said.
“They're a stubborn iron
horse team. They haven't
got a lot of kids, but what
they have are good.”
Gorgone expressed his
admiration for O’Reilly
stars Mark Resater, a 200
pound fullback; Brian
Judge, an outstanding
running back; and Joe
Onzik a tough linebacker
and halfback. The coach
also noted that Lake-
Lehman’s offense and
defensive line star, Bill
Lavelle, would be lost to
the team for the remainder
of the year.

OCTOBER 2, 1975
by Lee L. Richards
A funny thing happened
to Dallas Coach Jack Jones
on Monday. When he con-
tacted Pittston Area to
arrange for the make-up
date from Saturday’s
washout because of the
threat of the flood, the Pats
told Dallas officials they
didn’t want to play Monday
night.
While it’s hard to write a
story of this nature without
the other guy's version, it
appears from here that
Pittston Area took that old
walk to’ the ‘Apple Or-
chard.”
Sure they've got a game
with Valley West on Fri-
day, but if they can call off
a game or make it a “‘no-
contest,” who's to say that
any other team in the
league when faced with a
toughie can’t do the same.
When Dallas officials
contacted Charlie Hensley,
who’s supposed to be the
boss of the Wyoming
Valley Conference, he
passed the buck to Bob
Thomas (he’s the secre-
tary) of Valley West. Since
Valley West was involved
because they refused to
move this Friday’s Pittston
game back to Saturday
night, Thomas also passed
the buck. Where does the
buck passing stop???
Dallas should be
awarded a forfeit. They
were ready to play, but the
bid Division I school from
up the line wasn’t. Pittston
had everything to lose and
nothing to gain. So did
Dallas.
Let’s put things in a pro-
per perspective. The Wyo-
ming Valley Conference in
football has been on a de-
cline since about 1965. It
lacks intelligent leader-
ship, people with a know-
ledge of the game, quali-
fied coaches and not guys
* REVOLVERS
just out to pick up a fast
buck at the expense of a
bunch of athletes.
The Wyoming Valley
Conference has become a
bush league operation
simply because it’s
directed by unqualified
people.
Did you know that every
high school sends out a
contract for the football
games???They aren't
worth the paper they're
written on after this jerk-
water maneuver.
Dallas is supposed to
play Meyers this week. We
don’t believe Coach Mickey
Gorham will cancel out.
Could you see this
happening in Western
Pennsylvania, Ohio or
Texas??? Only in Wyo-
ming Valley--formerly a
good football area when the
WVC was one league and
nobody heard of A and B
Divisions.
LAKE-LEHMAN
DROPS ANOTHER
CLOSE ONE
Things have just got to
get better for the Lake-
Lehman football fortunes.
Coach Rich Gorgone is
wondering when his lads
are going to emerge with a
triumph in a close en-
counter. They bowed to
Dallas last Turkey Day, 12-
7; bowed to Meyers this
year, 12-7--and Monday
night dropped a toughie to
a bigger Nanticoke Area
eleven, 17-14.
Both teams scored twice
in the first half. Chris Yan-
chick scored both of Lake-
Lehman's touchdowns on
short runs. His first came
on an option and the second
on a bootleg.
A "dejected Coach Gor-
gone said, ‘Chris is
becoming a stellar quar-
terback. He's moving our
club. He's become our
leader on the field. I just
can’t say enough about the
little things he’s done. He
has been reading the oppo-
nents defenses and execu-
ting well.”
What really has Coach
Gorgone down is the close
losses. Two turnovers led
to the Trojans’ touchdowns
in the first half.
We're still makin that
crucial miscue that’s kill-
ing our consistency. Still,
our kids hang in there and
play with abandon. We just
got outmuscled again,”
Gorgone pointed out.
Nanticoke Area did have
a heap of miss-matches
and they knew just where
to attack.
Lake-Lehman has
Bishop O’Reilly at home
Saturday and they face
another big and strong club
that is physical. Lake-
Lehman obviously is hurt-
ing without Bill Lavelle in
the middle.
Mark Kalish again ran
well for the Knights and
Bob Cummens played his
usual strong game as the
hub of the defense.
