It is under auspices of the English Department and is directed by the Rev. John 8S. Corcoran, CSC. Father Corcoran left his Educational the program the University of The communications student a semester internship with commercial newspaper publishers, radio and television stations, public relations and advertising agencies, and public radio and television of north- eastern Pennsylvania. Internship is required of majors and represents the central focus of the communications program. The professional training experience with media organizations is concentrated into one semester, representing 15 credit hours of academic work. Each week, the interns are with the personnel of the media for 39 hours and attend a two-hour seminar supervised by the director of the communications program. The internship is invaluable to students since it provides practical on-the- job experience generally required for future employment in communications. The new program uses several courses from other departments to supplement eight new courses introduced as the initial core of the communications program. The communications courses are in the theory of mass communications; newspaper reporting, editing, layout; radio news programming, and documentary production, prepared in media law, advertising, and public relations. : 1 More than 5,200 undergraduates qualified for the Dean’s List at the Pennsylvania State University for the fall term, which ended in November.
