Music Review

Richard =~ Chapline and
Michael Haberkorn presented a
program of music for one piano
(four hands) and two pianos
(still with four hands) last
Sunday afternoon at Wilkes
College Center for the Perform-
Cub Scout Pack 132
Plan Meeting, Nov. 20
Cub Scout Pack 132 will hold a

ian Church, Dallas. All interest-
ed boys who did not sign up for

School Night for Scouts will be
able to do so at this pack meet-
ing. Boys must be accompanied
by a parent. Pack 132 has open-
ings for both Cub Scouts and
Webelos.
The highlight of the evening
will be a Bobcat ceremony and

and Webelos who are eligible
for them.
Mrs. Walter Chappel, 57
Huntsville Road, Dallas, is the
den leader coach for the pack
and will be able to answer any
questions new cubs may have
regarding joining the pack.
All Cub Scouts and Webelos
and their parents who are now
present members of Pack 132
are requested to attend this
meeting as important business
concerning the pack will be dis-
cussed at this time.
ing Arts. Normally I avoid this
type of concert, operating on the
theory that, like eating, it’s
more fun to do than to watch.
Perhaps my enjoyment of the
concert was due to the fact that
I have stayed away from this
type of program for so long.
More to the point, I think I
enjoyed it because it was ex-
tremely well thought out and
well played.
By well thought out, IT mean
that the pieces did not follow
each other in relentless order of
composition in history. The pro-
gram was Mozart (Classical)
“Fantasia in F Minor, K. 594,”
“Schumann (Romantic) “Eight
Pieces from Opus 85,” Rach-
maninoff (Romantic) ‘‘Slava,”
Bach (Baroque) “Four
Selections,”” and Milhaud
(Contemporary) f‘‘Scara-
mouche.”’ It may look strange
on paper, but it worked.
The Mozart dates from the
end of the composer’s career
and is a basic slow-fast-slow
piece. It served admirably to
settle both performers and
audience (an unusually large
audience, too). The eight
Schumann pieces sounded as
for or about children.
(Schumann was fond of children
as witness the size of his own
family and compositions such
as ‘‘Scenes of Childhood’ and
“Album for the Young.”) They
are short, all with titles
suggesting children (‘‘Birthday
March’, ‘‘Hiding,” ‘‘Ghost
Tale”, etc.) and were delight-
fully played. Rachmaninoff’s

“Slava’’ uses the same tune
Mussorgsky used in the
Coronation Scene of the opera
“Boris Godounov.’”’ It made a
fine clangorous ending for the
first half of the program.
Of the four short works of
was achieved in ‘‘Sheep May
Safely Graze,” but the entire
group left nothing to be desired.
The closing selection is a stand-
ard on the duo-piano circuit and
itis a favorite of audiences. It is
contemporary without being
painful to the ear, very tricky in
places, and closed the program
brilliantly.
I neglected to say that the
first half of the program con-
sisted of both pianists at one
piano; the second half of music
for two pianos. It was an after-
noon of pleasurable, at times
quite exciting and at all times
sensitive, music making. What
better way to spend a Sunday
afternoon?
The Misericordia Players

final preparation for their
production of “Wild, Wilder,
Wildest’’ this week, according
to director Walter C.J. Ander-
sen.
The evening of excerpts from
Thorton Wilder plays will be
presented at the college, Thurs-
day, Friday, and Saturday, in
Walsh Auditorium. The curtain

ege Misericordia students but
school students. Paul Gallag-
her, a Bishop O’Reilly Senior

play the role of a singing waiter
in the ‘‘Hello Dolly” finale, as
will Tom Dunn, a Meyers High
School Senior from Riverside
Drive in Wilkes-Barre.
One of the featured players
will be Conrad Gonzalez of Dall-
as. Mr. Gonzalez made his de-
but as a Misericordia Player
last spring as the giant in “Jack
and the Beanstalk.” In ‘Wild,
Wilder, Wildest,”’ he appears as
the stage manager in ‘Our
Town,” the stage manager in
“The Happy Journey to Cam-
den and Trenton,” Moe in “In-
fancy,”” Horace Vandergelder
in “The Matchmaker,” and ag-
ain as Horace in the ‘‘Hello
Dolly’ scene.
Assisting Mr. Andersen in the
production will be Gene Garber,
serving as technical director,
and Rita-Jo Little, stage man-
ager.
