“Alleluia!” filled the air this
week in Dallas as more than 350
Sisters of Mercy celebrated
their heritage and their role in
local churches. Activities at
Mercy Center and College Mis-
ericordia included a ceremony
of reception, colorful process-
ion, historical displays, multi-
media presentations, prayer
services, and just reminiscing.
Highlighting the “Days of
Celebration,” from Aug.
through Aug. 22, were address-
es by Sr. Concilia Moran, RSM,
administrator general of the
Sisters of Mercy of the Union;
Sr. M. Silverius Shields, RSM,
executive secretary of the
Federation of the Sisters of
Mercy of the Americas; and Sr.
Jane Frances Kennedy, RSM,
provincial administrator of the
Province of Scranton.
On a twelve-foot Mercy Cross,
a college designed by Sr. Siena
Finley depicted the various
apostolates of the community.
A colorful procession took place
Wednesday. The Sisters from
Gate of Heaven Convent as well
as those on the campus of Coll-
ege Misericordia took part in
the procession, carrying ban-
ners of College Misericordia
took part in the procession,
carrying banners depicting
their role in the local church.
The Gate of Heaven Banner,
created by Amelia Yarmel, fac-
ulty member from Edwards-
ville, was a picture ‘painted’ in
yarns of different colors. Coll-
ege Misericordia’s banner of
the college seal was created by
Sr. Sharon Gallagher, RSM.
Thursday morning two young
women were accepted into the
community in a ceremony of re-
ception in which they received
the Mercy Covenant.
The Most Rev. J. Carroll
McCormick, D.D., Bishop of
Scranton, honored the festivi-
ties Tuesday as the principal
celebrant in the concelebrated
liturgy. Other members of the
clergy included Msgr. James C.
Timlin, Chancellor of the
Scranton Diocese; Msgr. James
Clarke, Msgr. Donald McAnd-
rews, Rev. John Walsh, Rev.
Homer Lawrence and Rev. Leo
Cummings, all former chap-
lains of the Sisters of Mercy in
Dallas; historian Rev. Alquin
Shields, OFM; and current
chaplains the Rev. Michael
Rafferty, the Rev. Daniel
Hitchko, the Rev. Thomas
Croghan, and the Rev. Joseph
Boles.
Displays depicting the history
of the Mercy communities of
Loretto, Harrisburg, Hazleton,
Wilkes-Barre and Towanda
which are now all part of the
Scranton Province were
arranged by Sr. Regina Kelly,
RSM, and Sr. Sylvia Connell,
RSM, both of College Miseri-
cordia. Documents, art works,
books, music and citations
indicating some of the unusual
achievements of individual Sis-
ters were included.
Present for the ‘Days of
Celebration’ were former
administrators of the Province:
Sr. M. Celesting McHale, RSM,
Sr. M. de Lourdes Rivers, RSM,
and Sr. M. William Joseph Ly-
don, RSM.
Participating in the liturgies
on Wednesday and Thursday
were Msgr. ‘Andrew McGowan,
Rector, Pius X Seminary, the
Rev. Lawrence Homer, former
chaplain at Mercy Center, the
Rev. Thomas Jordan and the
Georgine Kolvic.
Rev. Stephen McGough, pastor
and assistant pastor at Gate of
Heaven Church, Dallas.
Clergy from other dioceses
where the Sisters of Mercy
serve also attended. They were
the Rev. Frank Recigliano, Br-
oklyn; Msgr. William Keeler,
Harrisburg; Msgr. John J.
Rudden, Great Neck, N.Y.; the
Rev. Thomas Gallagher, Rock-
ville Centre, N.Y.; and the Rev.
Joseph Byrnes, ‘Douglaston.

ter Company has been cited by
Financial World, a leading
financial publication, for its
1974 Annual Report. The
citation will be presented at the
New York Hilton Hotel Oct. 24.

president, has been notified the
company’s report to share-
holders this year is considered
exceptionally informative, well
designed, and easy to read.
The citation is
“Merit Award” and will place
the publication in line to
compete for a higher award, the
Financial World said.
According to the publication,
Treasury Secretary William E.
Simon will be the principal
speaker at the New York Hilton
banquet where the award will
be given.
