Mounts’ gym. The 26-24 upset
knocked the Mountaineers out
© of a first place tie with the Han-
over Hawkeyes. The upset
3 came only four days after the
} local team had upset the much
touted Meyers Mohawks.
D. Pape gave the Crusaders
4 their first team score by flip-

when the Dallas grappler was
upturned.
S. Pintefyts 1b. (D), dropped
a one-sided, 5-1 decision to D.

Konnick, on the sidelines with
an injury, was put down by ex-
perienced B. Lipfert in 4:42.
With the score 15-0, M. Cook,
119 1b. gave the Mounts 4 points
by outscoring G. Fedor 13-3, and
J. Kasper; 126 1b. (D) ran the

young wrestler is showing great
improvement and is marked for
a steady varsity berth for next
season if he continues his

Mounts in the lead 18-3 by up-

with two points when J. Kasper,
126 lbs. (D), and C. Karcutski
(W) fought to a 3-3 draw.
In an exciting, fast-moving
bout, RichaBridle, 132 lbs. (D),
outscored Champi 8-7, and
the Mounts were up front 23-5.
Frank Hazeltine, 138 lbs. (D),
moved fast and looked good as
he flattened Andy Hreha in 4:57.
Todd Kirshner, 145 lbs., (D),
lost little time in taking Harry
Schmaltz 12-0 for a four point,
super-win to put the Mounts in
the lead 33-5. :
Dave Puchalsky, 154 lbs., re-
mained undefeated as he pinned
his opponent, Mark Kelly, in
I 1:37, and Russ Thrasher, 167

Skip Shook, 185 lbs. (D) was
leading Ken Sickler 5-0 before
he clamped him in 3:17, to post
a 48-5 score for the Mountain-
ers.
Art Gramps, popular hwt.,

eers by turning over Jack
ropp in 3:29 to give the Dallas
oyS a 54-5 win over the War-

In the jayvee match pre-
eding the varsity competition,

1451b. (D), wrestled a one-sided
10-1 bout, to put the score at 18-
13.
Dallas fans hope for a victory
came to the fore as 154 lb. D.
Puchalsky put D. Hunzer flat in
2:33, to put the Mountaineers
ahead 19-18.
The next bout spelled disaster
as R. Thrasher (167), ahead 4-1
on points going into the second
period fell into the clutches of S.
Sallitt (C) in 3:17, and the
Crusaders again took the lead,
24-19.
Skip Shook, 185 1b., gave the
Mountaineers another chance
for victory as he brought home
a 4-2 decision over D. Coleman
to make the score 24-22. All hope
was lost; however, when A.
Gramps, hwt. (D), leading 5-4,
was charged with a penalty for
removing his headgar, and the
bout ended in a draw, for a final
26-24 score.
M. Solomon was the official.
The jayvee match was
another story as the young
Mounts took the Crusaders 15-
10.
Coughlin jumped into a 4-0
lead when 112 1b. B. Manganello
(D) dropped a 16-2 decision to
F. Monahan, but the Mounts
took back 3 points when D.
ser 5-3.
C. Riegel, 126 1b., was turned
over by C. Thomas in 2:49 to put
the city team in the lead 10-3.
The team score ran to 10-6 when
D. Kirshner took T. Mendez 6-0.
B. McDonald (D), outbattled
A. Kopchko 8-0, to bring Dallas
within one point. B. Hislop (D),
put the young team in front by
besting P. Shields 10-4, and with
his team in front 12-10, G.
Ostrum iced the cake by
decisioning J. Molitoris 10-3 for
the final 15-10 score.

With the score 11-2, B. Mec-

Petro 17-2, and Ed Williams
pinned 167 1b. EK. Nicholson in
3:51.

Rogan. The varsity official was
Bob Herman, who turned in a
fine performance for both
teams.
The Mountaineers will meet
the Spartans of Wyoming Valley
West at home, Jan. 30, at 7:30
p.m. Preliminaries start at 6:30
p.m.

Black Knights
Wyoming Seminary’s Blue
Knights made it an easy 65-37
win over the Black Knight
cagers of Lake-L.ehman, Friday
night.
Coach M. Sharock’s boys
were outscored 20-7 in the first
period, with Sem’s T. Grosek
making nine of the points. The
Blue Knights added 15 to the
Black Knights eight in the se-
cond quarter, to lead 35-15 at the
half.
The Seminary squad scored
another 15 to the Knights’ 6 in
the third to take a 29 point lead.
In the final quarter the Lake-
Lehman five took the Blue
Knights by one point, to make
the final score 65-37.
T. Grosek picked up 19 points
for the visitors, five of them on
the foul line. Stettler and Sucho-
ski had eight points each.
Coombs and Allardyce each
scored eight for the Lake-Leh-
man team, with Allardyce
making good six at the free line.
Lake-Lehman made good
nine of 15 fouls and the Semi-
nary five made good 11 of 20.
Officials were Allabaugh and
Thomas. y
Lake-Lehman will open se-
cond half play in the B Division
against Dallas Friday night, at
the Mountaineers’ senior high
school gym.
St. John’s edged out the
Mountaineers, 53-52, Monday
night, despite a last period, 16-
point rally by the Dallas cagers,
in the playoff game for first half
honors in the B Division of the
Wyoming Valley Basketball
League.
, Both teams entered the com-
petition with a 6-1 season
feating St. John's, 63-62, early in
the season, then bowing to the
Crestwood Comets, 54-47.
The contest was nip and tuck
all the way, with the score at 12
all at the end of the first period
and the half ending with St.
John’s in front 24-22.
High scorers for Bob Cicon’s
cagers were B. Slicker with 13
and S. Meskers with 12. Sickler
picked up nine of his points in
the first half, while Meskers sat
most of it out on the bench.
Meskers then came back in the
second half to score most of his
points.
St. John’s had M. Finnerty,
with 14; J. Gilhooley, with 13;
and J. Hannon, with 12. Both
Meskers and Finnerty excelled
in rebounds.
With three minutes remain-
ing in the game, St. John’s held
a 49-42 lead, until Meskers led
the Mountaineers rally, scoring
eight of the final quarter's 16
points.
With seconds remaining in
the game, Dallas took the ball
out, behind by one, but lost it
when Zumchak was unable to
put it in play in the time limit.
Gilhooley put it in for two on the
next play for 53. Meskers then
scored two for the Mountain-
eers as game time ran out.
Joth teams had foul trouble,
with T. Considine out on per-
sonal fouls. Meskers, Finnerty
and Gilhooley had four each
when the contest ended.

Noxen-Beaumont Cub Pack
530 held its annual Pinewood
Derby at the Beaumont School
Friday. Twenty-one cubs en-
tered cars in the race. Competi-
tion was fierce and the large
audience contributed {o the ex-
citement by cheering on fa-
vorites as elimination races
finally produced three medal
winners. Paul Dembowski won
the first place gold medal, and
Tim Harvey, in second, won a
silver medal. Third place
bronze medal was awarded to
Joe Maloney.
The Derby cars and medals
were gifts from Bowman's
Creek Lion’s Club, sponsor of
the Pack. Lion’s representa-
tive, Charles Dente, acted as
judge for the event.
Cubmaster Walter Davidson
awarded the Bobcat badge to
Reo Cheshire and a gold arrow
point to Russell Banta, both
from Den 3. It was announced
that a Blue and Gold dessert
meeting will be held on March 1
for Cubs and families of the
Pack. Den mothers for Pack 350
are Elaine Dembowski, Den 1,
Noxen, Carol MacDougal, Den
2, Beaumont, and Joan David-
son, Den 3, Beaumont.
