An ecology story by Dorothy
Shuttlesworth titled, °‘Litter—
The Ugly Enemy” is new to the
shelves of the Back Mountain
Memorial Library's children’s
annex. Man may be well on his
way toward being the only spe-
cies in the history of life ‘on
carth to become extinct by suf-
focating in his own garbage.
In this book, the author des-
cribes the terrible plight of all
of us. since all of us are affected
by litter and garbage. We must
realize that almost everyone is
to blame for garbage and litter
pollution.
All living things have a rela-
tionship to each other and to
their surroundings. The study of
such relationships is called eco-
logy. Populations are growing
rapidly. With the great increase
in numbers of people and all
of additional waste material are
created. And waste material. or
garbage. has become a real
challenge to our society.
~The cities of the United States
spend hundreds of millions of
dollars a year cleaning up litter.
And many more millions trying
to dispose of refuse in ways that
will not endanger health or des-
troy property values.
This book presents the story
of one city. Although this city is
an imaginary place, it repre-
ents what has happened in
Er real towns and cities. The
good fight against litter. as it is
being waged in a few outstand-
ing communities of the United
States. is described.
This is a book about how pol-
lution is studied and how it is
conquered by scientists, techni-
cians. and especially private ci-
tizens. It will make every read-
er. young and old, want to join
in the fight against this national
menace.
“Your World—Your Sur-
vival’, by Matt Warner is a
has been a matter of growing
concern for some time. not only
in America. but all over the
world. This book takes a close
look at the problem, which to-
day has reached critical pro-
portions. and discusses what
must be done if man is to sur-
vive the devastating effects of a
polluted environment and need-
less waste of our natural re-
sources. For, as the author
points out. air and water that
are clogged with impurities be-
come health hazards of incalcu-
lable proportions. And unless
something is done soon to pro-
tect and conserve our natural
resources. man's chances for
survival on this planet look very
grim. (
The book encourages the
reader to take part in any effort
in his community to deal with
specific problems of conserva-
tion. Timely and highly infor-
mative. the book includes about
fifty photographs. an index and
a bibliography.
