CE TT CT Page 6 John Heller William J. Umphred, vice president of operations, Com- monwealth Telephone Com- pany, has announced the ap- pointment of John A. Heller and Donald C. Smathers as general operations manager and chief engineer, respectively. Mr. Heller was formerly plant staff manager for Common- wealth. Prior to joining Com- monwealth in December, 1966, he was employed by the Bell Telephone Co. of Pennsylvania and Western Electric. A graduate of LaSalle College majoring in industrial relations, Mr. Heller will be responsible for the overall plant and com- mercial field operations group at Commonwealth. Mr. Heller, who will be head- quartered at Dallas, the com- pany main office, resides with his wife Judy at 281 Rutter Ave., Kingston. Don Smathers, the new chief engineer for Commonwealth, was formerly vice president, engineering with Continental International Telecommunica- tions Ltd., subsidiary of Conti- nental Telephone. In his former position he was responsible for the design, development and in- stallation of complete turn key telephone operations. in Latin America and the Caribbean. Mr. Smathers’ prior telephone experience includes staff en- gineering work with the REA in Washington, D. C., Page Tele- communications, the Bell Tele- phone Co., and General Tele- phorie. In his new assignment Mr. Smathers will be responsible for the entire engineering operation at Commonwealth. He will be headquartered in Dallas at Commonwealth’s main office. The Smathers—Don, his wife Helene and son Jon—will reside at 128 Yeager Ave., Forty Fort. by Mrs. Ray Kelly Mr. and Mrs. Loren Case are visiting their daughter, Mrs. Jack McGinley and family at Wharton, N.J., and Loren’s sister, Emeline Cook, who is ill. Mrs. Elmon Turrell returned home from the Tyler Hospital Saturday. She was injured in a fall at her home. Marion Harmon is a surgical patient in the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. Sale will be conducted in the school auditorium, Machell Avenue, Dallas. Mr. and Mrs. William Mason, Endwell, N.Y., spent the week- end at the home of Mrs. Joseph Hackling and son Carl. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Barton of Athens called on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Rauch, Macungie, called on the Robert Mays over the weekend and spent some time at their cabin at Kasson Brook. Angeline Shalata is a patient in General Hospital and under- went surgery Saturday morn- ing. Margaret Riehl, Wilkes- Barre, and Hildegard Chester, Philadelphia, were Sunday visitors at the Raymond Gun- tons.’ Irma Weaver and Mrs. Albert Goble are in Georgia for a week and will attend the graduation of Gary Paul Weaver, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Weaver. Mrs. Tom Gay has been car- ing for her mother, Grace Cook, Carverton. . Mr. and Mrs. Walter Galka Sr., Fairless Hills, spent the weekend caring for the Walter Galka Jr. family while Mrs. Galka was hospitalized. Mr. Riegel agreed that the reason the teachers had decided to meet at the same time as the school ‘board was to facilitate consideration of any new proposals which might be placed before the association. He had indicated during a telephone conversation with the Post Monday that a survey taken earlier had revealed that 90 percent of Lake-Lehman’s teachers considered the length of the school day the most important issue in the bargaining talks.
