A TRAE TN, = yas A TP SBR ATR MU EAST oR Ur SER 8 BL Page 6 THE DALLAS POST, DEC. 21, 1971 True Grid The number of teams with a chance of winning the Super Bowl has been reduced from 26 to eight. The teams on this list are, for the most part, those that most experts expected to see. Perhaps the only real surprise is the inclusion of Washington and the exclusion of Oakland at the division play-off level. True Grid is going to remain with the team he picked to win the Super Bowl before the season started—the Kansas City Chiefs. Here are True Grid’s picks for the N.F.C. Dallas at Minnesota: This should be a classic—the most prolific offensive team against the league’s best defense. It is usually advisable to put your money on the best defensive team in the big ones. However, Dallas combines their versatile and potent offense with an excellent veteran crew on defense. The Vikings are inept offensively and they can’t rely on their defense to outscore Dallas. Dallas 24, Minnesota 13. Miami at Kansas City: The Chiefs defense should be able to contain the Dolphins’ ground attack. Len Dawson has displayed the ability to make the big play via Otis Taylor. The Dolphins have not been im- pressive in their last few outings. Look for the chiefs to win a tough one. Kansas City 27, Miami 17. Washington at San Fran- cisco: When John Brodic is on, the 49ers can beat anybody. Mr. Brodic has been inconsistent and so have the 49ers. Washington looked great beating Los Angeles but poor in their loss to Cleveland. The Washington defense could be the difference. However, True Grid looks for San Francisco to win a close one. San Francisco 24, Washington 20. ..Baltimore at Cleveland: The Browns have come on strong after a dismal start. The Colts raised many questions concern- ing their strength by losing to the New England Patriots. The Colts have the ability to get up for the big ones. The Browns could spring an upset but True Grid picks the Colts. Baltimore 23, Cleveland 17. The college bowl games are still being played, and after careful scrutiny, True Grid picks the following winners: ..Peach Bowl: Mississippi (9-2) vs. Georgia Tech (6-5): The Rebels were soundly whipped by Alabama and Georgia but won all other games impres- sively. Georgia Tech is on the rebound after a poor start. They almost beat powerful Georgia in ‘their last game. The records would indicate that Ole Miss should be a big favorite. However, True Grid thinks the Rebels will be lucky to win by three points. Rose Bowl: Stanford (8-3) Michigan (11-0): Stanford has been characteristically unpre- dictable. They have a facility for winning the big game as they demonstrated in last year’s Rose Bowl upset victory. "However, they have dropped three games to mediocre op- ponents (Duke, Washington State and San Jose State). The Wolverines have been very consistent offensively and defensively, averaging 37 points a game while yielding only six per contest. If one truth has be- come evident this year for fore- casters it is: “When in doubt, select the better defensive team.’ Michigan/ is better defensively. The Wolverines over the Indians by nine. Silver Leaf Party The Kunkle Silver Leaf Christmas party was held at the Alderson United Methodist Church Dec. 14, at 6:30 p.m. After being served a delicious dinner by the Church WSCS, carols were sung and gifts exchanged. Present were: Elizabeth Hess, Ruby Miers, Grace Ide, Lena Martin, Jennie Miers, Arline Updyke, Jane Hackling, Julia Scott, Myrtle Hess, Virgie Elston, Lillian Kunkle, Eleanor Frederick, Mayetta Roberts, Naomi Ashburner, Ella Brace, Lana Birnstock, Dorothy Dodson, Florence Klimeck, Agnes Elston, Florence Conden, Adirene Collis, Jean Pellam, Edith Costanzo, Sylvia Brace. For all housework, choose shoes with comfortable, fatigue- reducing low heels and rubber or composition soles, suggests the Farm and Home Safety Committee of The Pennsylvania State University. and the A.F.C. play-offs. Orange Bowl: Alabama (11-0) vs. Nebraska (12-0): This is by far the most interesting and significant game. Both teams are sound offensively and defensively. Nebraska gets a slight edge offensively due to the greater versatility the passing game gives to their offense. Defensively the Crimson Tide has demonstrated a quickness and big play factor while Nebraska relies on brute strength and size. The team with the fewest turnovers will win. The defense is almost even but Nebraska has more scoring punch—the Cornhuskers by five. ..Cotton Bowl: Texas (8-2) Vs. Penn State: Despite their loss to Tennessee, True Grid feels that the Nittany Lions are a legitimate national power even with their light schedule. In view of the national reaction to their loss to Tennessee, they should go into this fray with a grim determination. However, in their last two games State has suffered costly turnovers and defensive lapses. The Longhorns will be 100 per cent = ~ healthy for the first time this season. Darrell Royal has a winning tradition in the bowls. Hesitantly, True Grid selects Texas and the Wishbone by eight. ..Sugar Bowl: Auburn (9-1) vs. Oklahoma (10-1): Look for a high scoring tilt here. Both teams have been able to put plenty of points on the board this year. In a classic struggle between Auburn’s passing game and Oklahoma’s running attack, look for the Sooners to dominate ball control. Auburn’s defensive unit has been more stingy but Oklahoma has played more potent opposition. If the Sooners control the ball (keep it away from Heisman Triphy winner Pat Sullivan). They should win—by eight points. Gator Bowl: Georgia (10-1) vs. North Carolina (9-2): The Bulldogs have outscored the opposition by an average 32-10 margin this season. This has been accomplished in a plod- ding, determined and un- spectacular fashion. Despite its 9-2 record, North Carolina has been less than impressive and has struggled to win by small margins over teams like Wake Forest, William and Mary and Virginia. However, the season’s final romp over Duke revealed strong potential. Once again, we will go with the better defense and pick Georgia by nine points. ..Fiesta Bowl: Arizona State (10-1) vs. Florida State (8-3): The Sun Devils displayed one of the nation’s best offenses again this year averaging 38 points per game. The only common opponent—Houston—beat Florida State 14 to 7 and lost to Arizona State 18-17. In ‘this contest the defensive edge must be given to Florida State but Arizona State has scored an average of 15 points more per game. The Sun Devils have more scoring ability and should win a toughie—by eight. Idetown Couples The Idetown Couples Club held its December meeting and Christmas party at the church recently. The WSCS of the church served a turkey dinner to mem- bers and guests. The list in- cluded the Rev. and Mrs. Fred Whipple, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jennings, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bergstrosser, Mr. and Mrs. Willis Ide, Mrs. and Mrs. Robert Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Ide, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Harrison, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Sweitzer Sr., Mr. and Mrs. Albert Sweitzer Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Robert Steele, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hubbell, and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Word. Devotions were conducted by Mr. Bergstrosser, who also con- ducted the business session. New officers were installed as follows: president, Willis Ide; vice president, Robert Steele; secretary, Pat Sweitzer; trea- surer, Robert Wilson. The group was entertained by its own ‘‘Idetown Players’, who presented comic skits. 20 LBS. up WITH COUPON LB.
