original candles, known as ‘‘Sand-Wicks.”

The aroma of hot coffee
mingled with the smell of
candlewax, and the sound of
chatter filled the Lehman re-
sidence of Dorothy Major Baker
as she held open house Saturday
and Sunday.
Mrs. Baker’s annual affair is
for friends and customers who
are interested in her originally-
designed ‘‘Sand-Wicks,” wax
candles cast in sand molds. Her
candle creations range from
small ones to extra large ones,
with colors as varied as the
rainbow.
As friends called during af-
ternoon hours they were invited
to browse among the candle
display, and the antiques which
Mrs. Baker collects and sells to
antique buffs.
A folk singer, Judy Wilson,
strolled among guests, enter-
taining them with her songs as
she accompanied herself on the
guitar.
Holiday goodies were served
with hot coffee or spiced punch.

About four years ago, Mrs.
Baker became interested in
candlemaking and has evolved
her own formula of wax, stearic
acid and sand for her ‘‘Sand-
Wicks.” :
“Wherever we go, I usually
bring home pails of sand—some
fine and white; others coarse
and brown,’’ explains Mrs.
Baker. Pointing to the candles
on display, she said some were
made with Cape Cod sand, some
with sand from an old home of
theirs at Fairmont Springs,
some from Ohio sand, and other
places.
Candles are made by the Leh-
man resident all during the
year, but only fully exhibited
during the holiday season. Mrs.

Baker revealed that she has
used some 840 pounds of wax in
her candlemaking, to date.
