Pa. Game Commission Instructs
Youth on How to Handle Guns
An eager group of boys and
girls, ages 12 to 16, met
Saturday morning at Penn-
sylvania Game Commission
office, Dallas, to learn how to
handle guns safely.
It is compulsary in Penn-
sylvania, according to game
Warden Gdosky, that boys and
girls between the ages of 12 and
16 must have had at some time a
safety training course before
they can secure a hunting
| license.
Edward Gdosky, of the
Commission office, was in
charge of the class, assisted by
Jim Phillips and Al Rineman,
hunter-safety instructors. Mr.
Gdosky reported there were 158
youngsters in the free class, 30
of them girls.
Upon completing Saturday’s
six-hour class, each youngster
Archery deer season is open.
See your county agent for
publications which may be
available about ornamental
plant materials adaptable to
Pennsylvania’s climate and
soils.
Closes Oct. 29.

Although the program has
been compulsary in this state
since 1969, the local game
commission office has spon-
sored such classes, under Mr.
Gdosky’s tutelage, since 1963.
“We try to teach the youths
how to take a gun into a field,
how to handle it once in the
field, how to take it home, and
how to put it away safely at
home. Most accidents with guns
occur at home. Game laws and
respect for land owners are
taught also,” Mr. Gdosky said.
The potential nimrods in last
week’s class were mostly from
this area, but there were some
out-of-state boys and girls and
some from as far away as
Philadelphia. If they so chose,
the parents of the children could
remain in the classroom, along
with their child.
Any organization may
sponsor such a class, Mr.
Gdosky revealed. The State
Game Commission sponsored
the last one. There will be
another class Oct. 8 in Forty
Fort, sponsored by the Forty
Fort police.
Parents with children seeking
safety-hunting certification
may contact Game Warden
Gdosky for further information
concerning future classes.
