Children’s Library Has New Books on Animals One of the new books on ani- mals recently acquired by the Back Mountain Memorial Li- brary Children’s Annex is ‘Chipmunks on The Doorstep’, by Edwin Tunis. The book is Mr. Tunis’ first about natural his- tory and ecology. Some think chipmunks are the most en- gaging of all small wild creatures—and among the friendliest to man. The author tells how, with peanuts and a little patience, you can easily bring them to be regular visitors to your door- step. Mr. Tunis has done just this; he has also sat patiently in his backyard, sketchpad and notebook on his knee, watching, studying, practically interview- ing the dozens of chipmunks that share his property. The book has a very clear text and more than 70 full color drawings viewing every aspect of the lives of chipmunks throughoui the round of seasons. Another new book, written in poetic verse, is ‘Feathered Ones and Furry’ by Aileen Fisher which includes birds and animals both domesticated and in their natural habitats. Aileen Fisher is a well-known poet and nature writer. The poems, easy enough for the beginning reader, are both witty and sensitive and will be enjoyed by older readers too. The author and artist together have created an outstanding collection of poems and pictures for nature livers of all ages. Another new book on one of the favorite subjects of children is “A Book of Snakes’ by Dor- othy Hogner. This book explains what snakes are, where they live, what they feed on, how they breed, grow, and cope with enemies. It is also a guide to some of the more common kinds of snakes, both harmless and poisonous. This book, which contains some surprising an- swers to questions about snakes, has been added to the many books about snakes al- ready in the library collection. Beverly Peirce Is Wed To Russell L.
