For the first time in the
history of the Dallas Fall Fair, a
crafts auction will be held in

I dedicate this column to
friends and neighbors who have
wondered where my writings
went. To them I say “I would
rather switch than fight!”
The Batka family, Charles,
Eileen, Karenand Chuck, have
recently returned from an 11-
day vacation frolicking in the
surf at Point Pleasant, N.J.
Charlie also managed to get his
Barbecue
(continued from PAGE ONE)
chicken, baked potato, corn on
the cob, cole slaw, vegetable,
* cake, and beverage. All
chickens purchased are three
pounds or more each to insure a
sufficient amount for all diners.
The men of the church are
responsible for cleaning and
barbecuing the chickens, and
the corn is husked and cleaned
by young members of the
congregation under the wat-
chful eye of the chairman; it is
steamed in giant boilers over a
huge oven made of concrete
blocks.
The barbecue is always
served under a large tent and
goes on no matter what the
weather is.
The baked goods booth is also
a favorite with those who attend
the auction. Women of the
church bake and contribute
dozens of cakes, pies, cookies,
and hundreds of loaves of bread
and rolls. For the past two
years, more than 400 loaves of
bread have been sold each year.
This booth will be headed by
Ruth W. Schoonover.
As the Centermoreland
Methodist Church auction
grows in popularity, so, too, do
the net profits and in 1969 and
1970, the event netted more than
$5,000 annually. This money
goes into the church building
fund and is used to make the
necessary repairs and renova-
tions to the church. Some is
being held to eventually build
. an educational building.
Co-chairmen of this year’s
barbecue are Sheryl Phillips
and Cindy Weaver. Members of
the general auction committee
are Clarence Schoonover,
Robert Phillips, Ralph Weaver,
Ted Dymond, who has served
every year since the first
auction in 1955, and Richard
~ Brunges, who has been
chairman of the auctioneers
| eachyear since the first auction
began. Alta Kubic is ticket
chairman, Bea Beatly is in
|. charge of bargain items and
~ Judy Schoonover, refreshments.
The Rev. Larry Saxe is pastor
of the Centermoreland,
Dymond Hollow, and East
Dallas Methodist Churches.

Guests at the home of Mr. ahd
Mrs. Jack Gesmundo this past
week were their son, Joe and
Barbara Gesmundo, and grand-
children from Long Island, N.Y.
Belated birthday greetings to
Peter Tomaselli, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Fred Tomselli. Pete
celebrated his 11th birthday,
July 27, with a luncheon hosted
by Yolanda Tomaselli.
Happy to hear that Mrs.
Ralph Godleski is home from
the hospital and recuperating
nicely, but sorry to learn that
Mrs. Theron Osborne is a
medical patient at Wilkes-Barre
General Hospital. Get well soon,
Shirley!
Sincere sympathy to Helen
and John Kishkill upon the
death of their nephew, Michael
Kishkill. -
Have you seen the sign which
hangs across the Correale
threshold, “Grossingers of the
Ponocos?” It’s really invisible
to us, but it lights up to most of
their out-of-town relatives. This
week they entertained Mr. and
Mrs. Joseph Valenti of South
Hampton, N.Y. Mrs. Valenti is
the mother of Vince Correale. If
the deluge of company doesn’t
let-up, Mrs. Correale has vowed
to join the Cloisters for some
peace and quiet.
Enjoying a stay at the
Tomaselli home were Mr. and
Mrs. Dom Zadera of Brooklyn,
N.Y. Grace Zadera is the sister
of Yolanda Tomselli.
Sorry “0 hear that Mrs. Vince
Angelicola slipped and fell at
Harveys Lake and injured her
back and leg. Recover quickly,
Marge, the dance season will
soon be upon Oak Hill.
Have you ever been caught in
a rainstorm in Wyoming
Valley? Well 1did July 29, and it
will be listed in my diary as one
of the worst events in the five
years I've lived here. I was
shopping at Mark Plaza
Shopping Center when the
downpour began. I had to wade
through the parking lot to my
car, whose wheels were sub-
merged in water to their hub
caps. A good number of side
streets were closed and traffic
was snarled for blocks. To
convey anidea of the magnitude
of this problem, it took one hour
and forty-five minutes to get
from Edwardsville to Dallas.
The inadequacy of these
roads to handle the water run-
off was a very enlightening and
discouraging discovery. If
nothing is done to improve this
situation, it will be’ necessary
for people traveling through
this area, during a rainstorm, to
have unsinkable cars equipped
with life jackets and water
skiis!
