Shavertown Elementary School Annex was builtin 1924, and the one-story wooden structure has housed sev- eral generations of students. Shavertown Landmark Soon Will Be History The old Shavertown School Annex will soon be no more. Dallas School District board has given the go-ahead to have the “educational landmark razed. In its time, the wooden struc- ture has served as classroom, medical center and recreation center. John Parrish was awarded the job of dismantling the one- story building and carrying away all lumber, masonry and debris, for which he will receive $1,000 on completion of his task. Work is to begin immediately. Plans are to increase the park- ing area for Shavertown Elementary School. New Counselor Assigned SMOKED HAMS A number of other bids has been approved by the school directors, and work is to be completed before school starts. Among these are installing an aluminum entrance at Trucks- ville Elementary School; paint- ing exterior; and installing gut- ters at Shavertown. Two bids on ticket booths for Dallas Senior High School ath- letic field were turned over to the property committee for tabulation and review. At least one director felt the bids were much too high on the booths. Earl Fritzges suggested “both bids be rejected and we build our own” At Dallas Elem. Schools Elementary students in Dallas School District will be advised and counseled by a guidance counselor beginning with the 1971-72 school year. Gloria Whitman, 411 Warren Ave., Kingston, has been newly elected to the post by the school board. Under contract, the coun- selor’s salary begins at the sixth step on the Master's degree salary schedule. Mrs. Whitman received her Bachelor's degree from Goucher College, Towson, Md., ~ where she was a dean’s scholar. Her Master’s degree work in elementary school counseling has been at Shippensburg State College. She taught five years in the elementary schools of Martinsburg, W. Va. Mrs. Whitman's teaching experience includes having been a member of the staff that opened West Virginia’s first open space, ungraded, struction school. She has also been involved in team teaching, - establishing behavorial ob- jectives in learning, developing scopes - and sequences of curricula, and implementing the multi-media approach to instruction. Mrs. Whitman has had ex- tensive experience in creative drama and has. dir oted school newspapers “al tid, othe) : activities. # “I believe Mrs. Whitman to be an outstanding candidate for - this position,” stated Dr. Lin- ford Werkheiser, superin- tendent, as he recommended the counselor to the school board. Five New Teachers Lake-Lehman School Board hired five new teachers and ~ approved the inter-curricula transfer of another at its regular monthly meeting July 13. J. Franklin Patton presided in the absence of President Edgar J. Lashford. Named to replace high school social studies teacher Leonard Threston was Robert O. Roberts of Edwardsville. Mr. Roberts, a May graduate of East Stroudsburg State College, will receive a salary of $6,400. Mr. Threston’s resignation was accepted by the board im- - mediately prior to Mr. Roberts’ appointment; he has accepted a position as basketball coach at Crestwood High School. Three other first year teachers hired at the first step of Lake-Lehman’s salary schedule were Gerilyn T. Pawloski, Margaret Thomas, and Robert M. Mischak. Miss Pawloski and Miss Thomas, both Bloomsburg State College graduates, will teach remedial reading at the elementary level. Miss Thomas will also teach kindergarten one-half day at the ‘Noxen school. A 1971 graduate of Wilkes College, Mr. Mischak resides at 537 N. Gates Ave. Kingston. Carol Lynn Warchal, Lower Demunds Road, Dallas, was hired at a salary of $7,000. The West Chester State College ~ graduate taught first grade for two years at Malvern, Pa. Lois Hardisky, presently a * remedial reading teacher under the Federal ESEA program, will teach an elementary class at Noxen in the fall. A request from Band Director John Miliauskas for a raise totalling $1,200 was tabled by . the board for consideration at a ter date. Superintendent ert Z. Bellas pointed out ‘Mr. Miliauskas will receive 4 an increment totalling $700 in . the coming year and that his Hired at Lake-Lehman request is thus for an additional $500. Board members agreed that the request should be considered by the entire board (in addition to Mr. Lashford, board members Evan Edwards, Richard Ide and Solicitor Charles D. Lemmond were absent). Dianne Ide was approved as a part-time employe in the ad- ministration office. She will be compensated at the rate of $1.60 per hour. Thirty-eight professional employes were recommended for extra duty assignments for the school year 1971-72. Salary increments for these assign- ments range from $75 for the editor of the curriculm guide to $1,100 for the head football coach. The school directors ap- proved a request from Lan- ceford Sutton allowing him to discontinue his transportation contract with the district and to sell it to Francis Stolarick. Mr. Stolarick will be one of two bus contractors with whom. the board deals, Mr. Bellas noted; Clarence Payne is the other. Mr. Miliauskas received permission to attend the Second Annual Marching Band Con- ference and Workshop at West Chester State College, Aug. 4 through 7. Approximate ex- pense to the school district was listed as $75. Aletha Cragle, RD 1, Hunlock Creek, and Anna Mae Smith of RD 1, Noxen, were hired as cafeteria workers. The board also approved increasing the minimum wage paid to cafeteria workers from $1.60 to $1.75 per hour, a move which Superintendent Bellas estimates will increase cafeteria program costs by approximately $2,500... In recommending ‘the increase, Mr. Bellas noted that the program has ‘‘operated in the black every year.” individualized in-’ "THE DALLAS POST, JULY 22, 1971 LAST WEEK!
