Home Run Derby Final plans have been made for the Home Run Derby to be held Sept. 26 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the Dallas Intermediate field, the nearby parking lot, and the Little League field, Dallas. The event is being spon- sored by the Dallas Borough Recreation Committee and the Dallas Kiwanis Club. Members of the ‘recreation committee met recently with Jack Bradley, program director of the Home Run Derby, at the Dallas Intermediate field to test equipment to be used at the Derby. Applications are avail- able at many Back Mountain business establishments. En- tries will be also be accepted at the site of the Derby Saturday. Boys and girls, age 8 to 15, are eligible to compete. Pitching machines, batting tees and aluminum bats will be used. According to Mr. Bradley, the Home Run Derby came into being this year after a lot of thought and experimentation. The idea was to get as many youngsters as possible to com- pete. A short time after the Derby started, officials added a bat- ting tee so that six and seven year olds could be included in the competition. Officials of the Derby hope that in addition to their main objective ‘‘com- pete,” they can stimulate inter- est in baseball or sports in general. Youngseters starting competition at the age of six can continue to compete in the Derby for 10 years. “The ultimate aim of the Home Run Derby,” says Jack Bradley, “is to have regional, district, state and national championships. Prizes will eventually be $1000 scholar- ships, blazers, jackets, bats, balls, trophies, etc.” Mr. Bradley said, ‘“We hope to have more and more young- sters competing each year. Prizes will be awarded for continuous participation, most improvement, total best scores, ete. District winners will meet in major league parks and a na- tional will be held at a place not YePdetided > TRE The machine which will be used is, “a geared down’ ver- sion of machines used in all major league training camps. The speeds vary as do the scoring distances for different age groups. It is challenging, competitive and exciting. ‘“We have attracted large crowds wherever we wenf this year. Parent turn out has been better than expected,” said Mr. Bradley. “The Derby has out- drawn all other recreational programs We are aware that everyone is not a Mantle or Ruth and so have set the scoring So any hitter can win,” he con- tinued. . “Home runs have been plentiful. The aluminum bats adds uniformity.” The program to be held in Dallas Saturday is the first to be held in the area. Mr. Bradley expresed the hope that others will run the program next year with regionals to be held in Dallas. Certificates and probably trophies will be awarded at a future Kiwanis meeting. mini-bike race at Trucksville The Trucksville Mini-Bike Club, recently formed by a group of boys in their early teens, is sponsoring a Mini-Bike Enduro Race to be held Oct. 23 at 2 p.m. The event will start at the home of Brian Nichols, 268 Carverton Road, Trucksville, and follow a trail through the nearby woods.
