Africa Comes Home This typewriter has had time to get used to a whole new voca- bulary and angle of reference. For I have told Dorothy of course to use my typewriter and my desk where it sits always waiting for some skilled words to be sounded out on its keys. Last Sunday—I mean Sept. 13—Dorothy was expecting to meet over on the highway a young visitor and his young wife and conduct them to our house and church. The young man had been in Congo for a short term mission, where he had done ex- cellent work and maintained a fine Christian spirit. So Dorothy was glad to see him and his wife of two months. She had not re- turned with these visitors when time came for us to go to church. Mt. Zion church, Catherine’s adorable childrens’ choir was to sing a special num- . ber so we had to get there on time, hoping Dorothy and guests would make it before church had been long in pro- gress. The Africa Anthem ‘So church began and the ser- rice went on towards the time for the anthem. Catherine was sitting next to the front seat where she could sort-of direct the choir when they needed it. The congregation had just stood to sing the offertory re- sponse and down the aisle came Dottie and her guests. They went to Cathy’s beckoning to the very front seat ahead of Catherine and close to the choir! The choir stood to sing lovely "and expressive anthem with a rhythmic tinkling as of bells. Dorothy was sure to enjoy this, for the music was written by an African and the words had been translated from the Otetela language into English by Dorothy herself. veryone knew that the choir no. only had been well trained in this singing and rhythmic accompaniment, but we all recognized how well these singing children had done this number’ ‘Peggy Thomas told Cathy that the children, whenever they go for a ride in the car, are always breaking into song along the way. Our guests also thoroughly enjoyed the program. And we enjoyed these lovely guests and saw them on their way, giving them a safe conduct convoy to Route 81 on which they would continue their journey. M y Typewriter Talks by The Rev. Charles H. Gilbert - tied my ‘shoes myself, buildings of Valley Crest, for I like to have guests see the place where my heart has been so closely entwined these eight years. Catherine and Dorothy Present Program Monday was the first fall meeting of the Wilkes-Barre District Ministers and Wives Association at First United Methodist Church in Wilkes- Barre. Catherine had been asked to provide a program of devotions for the wives’ meet- ing. There had been a speaker dated to give a program on Africa, but at a late date the speaker phoned to say she was to be in Texas and could not be here. So the one in charge asked Catherine if she and her father could provide a program about Africa. Catherine replied that we could but asked her how it would be if Dorothy herself were able to provide it. Which of course was acceptable! So I sat in—not unwillingly!—at the wives’ meeting instead of going into the ministers’ meeting. Catherine had prepared a se- lection of beautiful slides with a spiritual connotation of excel- lent applied thoughts. On the side I want to say I was person- ally deeply moved by the de- voutly beautiful worship experi- ence. This was followed by slides and a talk by Dorothy about her work in Congo which was well-received by the women who also asked many questions which Dorothy an- swered in clear and under- standable fashion. In passing I was not surprised to find that several of the women want to date Catherine and program for some of their church meetings—which Cath- erine of course was willing to do. Dorothy’s speaking program will not commence until No- vember. Meanwhile Surgery After being checked over by the mission board doctor on her return from the Congo, it was advised that this missionary should have surgery very soon, not so much as an emergency measure but so as to get it taken care of and have time for recu- peration before speaking en- gagements come on and so as to be in good condition to return to Congo after Christmas. So at this writing Dorothy is in (to you, WAS in!) surgery and I await word of her progress. I expect it will all be good, for she has told doctors before now, ‘I always heal quickly!” So when the doctors told her she would be a week or two weeks re- covering, She declared, “I will be ONE week!” My Own Recovery Of course I don’t get over tury of age than Dorothy is! At this writing, however, I have shouted to my friends as Cathy has wheeled me around those long halls at Valley Crest, “I morning; And look! I'm using only ONE cane!” At which all are glad. 1 think my friends there do not feel too badly to have Cathy wheel me around just so long as I am there! And besides, they get duets from the red hymn book, not just solos. All my friends, patients and staff, sweepers and moppers, dining room people and all are, as always just wonderful to me— and us. I go there to bless them, and lo! I get the blessing!
