WALTERS Memorial Hwy., Dallas ~~ 675-1869 THE DALLAS POST, JULY, 30, 1970 social security benefits total S65 million monthly Social security benefits paid to residents of Luzerne County totaled $5,221,000 a month as 1969 ended, Emerson M. Per- rine, social security district manager, reported recently. A benefit increase, signed into law by President Nixon Dec. 30, 1969, has since raised the monthly rate of payment by 15 percent for 60,000 social security beneficiaries in Luzerne County, Perrine noted. Of the social security bene- faciaries living in this area 32,000 are retired workers and their dependents. Another 17,000 are receiving benefits as the survivors of workers who have died, and 9,000 are getting benefits as disabled workers or the dependents of disabled workers. Perrine pointed out that al- though the majority of social security beneficiaries are older people, about one out of every four is under age 60. In the State of Pennsylvania, 306,000 people under age 60 are collecting social security pay- ments each month. The 157,000 who are under 18 are receiving payments because of a working father or mother has died or is getting social security disability or retirement benefits.
