Parents Must Keep Children’s Confidence To effectively guide him through childhood and adolescent experi- ences, parents must have a child's trust and confidence, says Mrs. Marguerite L. Duvall, extension child development and family life spec- ialist of The Pennsylvania State Un- iversity. This parent-child relationship be- gins with the dependency of the in- fant and is nurtured by honesty, respect, and fairness. When a child tells a parent some- thing “as a secret,” the parent must respect this confidence as if it came from another adult, Mrs. Duvail points out. An episode that is funny to the parent may be embrrassing to the child. In revealing confidences, the parent teaches the child indirectly to withhold similar information in the future. Children sometimes complain that a parent shows favoritism. Some situations can be handled by draw- ing sticks, the child with the longest stick goes first. Other impartial de- vices may be effective. Children are aware of parents’ efforts to be fair. When parents are honest with children, give them respect, and strive to be fair, they encourage children to continue to trust and have confidence in them, Mrs. Du- vall adds.
