Wins Turkey
Paul Snyder was the lucky wine
ner of a-turkey at McCrory’s last
Friday night. His name was drawn
in the first drawing of the evening.
In spite of the warm weather, it
is beginning to look like Christmas,
as people are putting their homes
in gay holiday dress. Practically
every home is lighted and many
wreaths are already in windows. The
children are counting the days till
Santa comes and mothers are won-
dering aloud if they will get every-
thing done by then that needs do-
ing. My hope is that we do not
lose sight of the Holiness of this
holiday in all the hustle and bustle.

AIR POLLUTION. -
Where will you be living in 1991?
Will you be in a ‘brick and steel
complex connected by miles of as-
phalt and concrete streets, gasping
for breath under a blanket of filthy
and polluted air? It may be . . . un-
less we act now.
A MOST SERIOUS PRCBLEM
Over many of our larger cities to-
day, there is a “sea of air” as much
as three miles deep. Caught up in
this sea is a mixture of mud, grit,
smoke, smog, and various gaseous
substances. Together, these compose
the murky air which we describe
as haze and smog.
Dr. Walter Orr Roberts of the
U.S. National Centre for Atmos-
pheric Research, Boulder, Colorado
points up the seriousness of our air
i pollution problem in this dire pro-
diction: “In coming years thousands
of people will die in our cities simply
because they breathe.” Dr. Roberts |
warns that this will happen even
if we start now on an all-out nat-
ional program to clean up the dirty
air that overhangs our cities and
towns and also affects outlying
areas. The doctor's warning is con-

the problem. In far too many com-
munities, laws regulating the dis- |
posal of industrial wastes are either
ignored’ or poorly enforced. Prob-
ably in most cases, the laws them-
selves are inadequate and need to
be revamped and up-dated.
; POISONED AIR
| POLLUTES WATER TOO
. The poisons in our air are now
also a major contributor to. the
growing problem of water pollution.
We just do not know how many
people fall victim to respiratory and
virus ailments because of poisonous
substances in the air, in our
streams, and even on occasion in
| our drinking water.
Steps are being taken to cut down
on the harm rendered by fumes
from auto exhausts. If that does
not work, we may have to han cars
| from downtown areas of the largest
| cities and — as a health measure —
I force people to use public transpor- |
