Catholic, Protestant, Collaborate
To Relieve Famine-Stricken India
A nationwide appeal to: Catholics
and Protestants in this country on
behalf of the millions of. suffering
men, women and children in India|
will be conducted jointly by the |
overseas relief agencies of both |
faiths.
This will be the first nationwide |
appeal ever conducted jointly by !
the Catholic and Protestant faiths. |
It is being conductéd in response |
to pleas from Pope Paul VI and
the World Council of Churches for
Christians of all nations to unite’
in feniig-s solve India’s food short-
age.
Both agencies ove taken steps:
to increase their feeding programs
in India in an effort to help meet
the emergency. Catholic Relief Serv-
| ices has increased its program from
132 million pounds to 200 million
pounds of foodstuffs and sent a
special shipment of 22 million
pounds: of flour to the six areas
officially declared famine-stricken. |

| purchase 1,620,000 pounds of rice,
there tion of the joint action foi India | sent’ the Diocese of Bethlehem in
which has already arrived
and is now being distributed. 8 |
Church World Service is under-
taking to increase its current mass
feeding program from $500,000 to
1,000,000 persons daily in the worst
areas of the famine.
On May 55, the ‘two agencies
jointly chartered a vessel to ship
21,000 tons of U. S. government-
donated wheat from Galveston,
| Texas to Bombay, India.
Similar cooperative action
throughout the world came in an-
swer to the Papal and World Coun-
cil of Churches appeals, resulting
in aid worth millions of dollars now
| being sent to India.
Last month, representatives of
Catholic Relief Services and Church
World Service in India combined
with other international and govern-
ment social agencies to form the
Action for Food Production Com-
mittee for the coordination, sup-
port and technical guidance of agri-
cultural development projects
throughout that country.

Mrs. Ella F. Martin
Dies At 86 In Florida
Mrs. Ella F. Martin, Aunt Ella to

Huntsville Cemetery yesterday after-
noon.
Two ministers conducted services
from the Snowdon Funeral Home,
present and former pastors of
Huntsville Christian Church, Rev.
M. Richard Bevan, and Rev. Charles

tin, who died in 1929, was with
the fleet during World War I.
Mrs. Martin, 86, suffered a stroke
a year ago in her home at St.
Petersburg, Florida, an illness which
cancelled out her intention of re-
turning to this area to make her
home with her nieces, Mrs. Ella!
Schmoll and Mrs. Arline Covert.
She died Saturday afternoon in|
Mound Park Hospital, St. Peters-
burg, one week after the burial of
