[i On TV there was an interview
| with a Lutheran minister, a former
| student of the late Dieterich Bon-
| Toetfer, He was to explain the
terrible phrase, “God is dead.” His
| explanation was good, a meaning I
(had assumed was meant. Many
rave held erroneous ideas about
| God and the aim of some theolcgi-
| ans is to change those ideas, by
‘ coarsely announcing, “God is dead.”

| My quarrel is not with the ex-
planation but with the phrasing.
[ Along with many others my con-
cept of God has changed radically
through the years. The big picture
Bible available in my childhood
showed God as a venerable, long-
bearded man holding a yardstick.
He lay on his stomach on a low-
hanging cloud above Noah, show-
ing: him how to build the ark.
When that image of God faded from
my mind it never occurred to me
to say, “God is dead.” My present
idea of God came not from theories
in a book but out of first-hand expe-
| rience and ‘‘confrontation” with
God.
| The theologians did not have to
| blast out such a terrible phrase,
| “God is dead.” Not that people
Fi necessarily lose faith in God
but they will lose faith in the in-
| teariey of teachers of theology
| whose business it ig to lead us into
all truth about God. Let them
indeed clarify notions about God,
| lead us to such personal alignment
with God as can be tested in their
| everyday experience.

These military coups seem to
have taken the form of an epidemic |
through Africa. I don’t suppose most |
people will have noticed or given
