To most kids summer means
camp, and to a small group of
Back Mountain youngsters this
summer means the YMCA camp at
Fanti's Park.
There are twenty boys and girls
in the camp, and they manage to
keep their counselors hopping from
9:30 to 3:30 daily.
The camp day starts with devo-
tions, usually an inspirational story.
The Troop cousins, Diane and Lois,
. | say they like devotions best of all

Twenty YMCA Day Campers
Learn To Swim, Have Great Fun
by DEBBIE ROGERS
the activities at camp.
Lois, a wiry, tanned youngster
who doesn’t look like the type to
prefer devotions to more active
pursuits, also admits to being fond
of badminton.
The second order of the day is
exercise, twenty minutes of toe-
touches, knee bends, and such, cal-
culated to make the campers
stronger if not happier. Seven-
fiting from the exercises but adds
that he can’t always make it 'way
to his toes.
At 10 o'clock elective camping
begins. Campers are allowed to
choose among archery, games,
crafts, boating, and nature study.
Most of the boys take archery; the
girls prefer crafts.
Allen Gosart is one of the best
of the aspiring Robin Hoods. Last
session’s Outstanding Camper
proudly boasts a bullseye, a feat
matched by few. Eyre Price adds
shyly that he at least has hit the
target.
Arts and crafts is Nancy Samuels’
elective.
made a fish bag, a lanyard, and
many other things.
Swimming is the most important
activity at the camp. The aim is
to have all the youngsters swim-
ming well before the end of the
session. Evidence of the success
of the drive is the fact that of nine
non-swimmers who started camp
only five remain in that category.
Jaye Troop, seven, is officially a
non-swimmer but expects to grad-
uate to middle swimmer very soon.
Jackie Schmidt also hopes to ad-
vance, but unless he recovers from
the stomach aches that strike him
at swim time each day he’ll never
make it.
The girls have different ideas
about swimming. Barbara Lupu,
for example, likes swimming, but
not the water. Linda Kicher is
a bit braver; she only objects if
the water is cold.
The highest award at the camp
is the lake badge. Available only
to deep swimmers, it is earned by
swimming the quarter mile-wide
lake without stopping. They are
a boat as they make their attempt.
Dan Shannon is one of the latest
lake swimmers. Swimming every
conceivable stroke, moving in cir-
cles and tangents more often than
straight lines, he made it across
with a minimum of trouble. Rowed
home in ‘triumph, he quickly joined
friend Kevin Stetsen and others in
swim exercises.
«The climax at each camping ses-
sion is the overnight stay at the
camp. Every youngster cites this
as his favorite aspect of camp. Mar-
tin Kaye and Karen Kitchen can
chink of nothing else.
On camp-out day there are tents
to be pitched, fireplaces to be built,
wood to be gathered. Perhaps a
hike will be in order. Dinner will
be eaten in the open, and later
there will be songs and stories
around the campfire.
It will be a day to live up to
all expectations, the highlight of
a wonderful camp session and a
happy summer.
