THAT TRIP — I had very few stops on my trips, at ‘most check points I was waved on through, but did have to open my suitcase once, the first time I ever -had to. Ususally they only search Congolese. It happened I had in there my box of slides so I pulled out one of Pres. Kasavubu which charmed the soldiers no end (they were the Provincial ones, maybe the National ones wouldn't be all that happy) I tried out my Lingala on the soldiers and passed out little books of Bible verses, which pleased them. Police and soldiers often stop a mission car not to check it but to ask for books to read, so it’s nice to carry a bunch of tracts in Kikongo and /or Lingala. On the way back we all had to open suitcases at the one big bridge which is the place most closely guarded (very wisely!) but the guards were very polite and careful not to touch a thing themselves but had me do the opening. Needless to say they found no guns, bombs, grenades nor bows and arrows! Nov. 7 THERE IS A REAL NEED The point is, we have no regular appropriation from our Board or any. other, only the original capital grant. We hope our Board will soon come through with something. i for Public | I submitted a budget Health months ago. AND AGAIN — I have been meaning to ask you lots of quilt blocks cut in penny postcard size. The patients are al- ways begging for them, especially the men in Orthopedics. It gives ‘them something to do to while away ‘the weeks ey are laid up, and gives them a| blanket to take home. For some ‘of tthe refugees it may be the only cover they have at all. HOME GROWN. PEANUTS! ‘We have had enough rain to bring the peanuts above ground al- ready. A little girl, my houseboy’s sister, came and planted a patch to earn some money. About Jan. I should have my own home grown peanut butter — how about that! Nov. 17 COME KITTY, KITTY, KITTY! The cat had 5 kittens Sat. ‘night, ail coal black just like mama and papa. I had her: favorite drawer ail fixed and then she wens and had them while I was out — on ray bed!
