Kiown World-Wide, Not Dedicated, Geisinger Plans Its Golden Jubilee Geisinger Medical Center, where hundreds of Back Mountain people have been hospitalized, is planning its Golden Jubilee in 1965. The “hospital on the hill” over- looking the Susquehanna Valley at Danville will complete its fiftieth year of service on September 12, 1965. The George F, Geisinger Memorial Hospital was never formally dedi- cated. It was opened two weeks in advance of schedule in response to a critical community situation. A Bw | was sweeping Dan- Rs ville. 5. Abigail A. Geisinger, the donor, gliecided that the hospital should W¥:gin its work of mercy at this time. Plans for. the four-day dedication ceremony had to be scrapped. In- stead of what was to be the most elaborate event in Danville’s history. A simple private devotional service was held on September 24, 1915. Mrs. Geisinger and a small group of her intimate friends and advisors participated. The Danville Morning News, de- | scribing the hospital's emergency opening, noted that it was most appropriate ‘to enter upon its ex- alted mission of saving life and relieving suffering when such ser- vice was most needed.” The newspaper account continues: “Early in the afternoon, the new ambulance was observed flying up and down the streets on its melan- choly errands. Thus, one after an- other” of the sufferers were gather- ed nn This same dedication to service exemplified at its beginning has been characteristic of Geisinger’s growth from a 60-bed institution to the medical complex of today. Since that worrisome September day in 1915 to the present, nearly 330,000 persons have received care here as inpatients. Many others have re- ceived care as outpatients.
