Library Auction Kick-Off Dinner Draws Banner Crowd.
Over 200 people gathered in the large dining room at Irem Country Club Thursday
night, to set in motion the Eighteenth Annual Back Mountain Memorial Library Auction.
Seated at the speaker’s table, left to right, are: Rev. Richard Frank, assistant pastor of
Gate of Heaven; Attorney and Mrs. Mitchell Jenkins; Mr. and Mrs. William L. Guyette,
Off To A Good Start With The Kick-Off Dinner,
The Eighteenth Library Auction Shifts Into High Gear
David Schooley, former president
of Back Mountain Library Associa-
tion and this year’s chairman and
Emcee of the Auction Kick-Off Dinner,
worked through a staggering agenda
Thursday night in record time, polish-
ing off the meeting in time for people
to get home and collect on thelasthalf
of Dr. Kildare, or the entire Perry
Mason program.
~ With set speeches held to a mini-
mum, key Library Auction people
were introduced to take a bow; com-
mittee chairmen were announced by
Frank Hutton; an incredible amount
of food was served and eaten; photog-
raphers circulated in quest of candid
camera shots and more formal group-
ings; and a brisk sale of potted pink
geraniums from Hills occupied the
final five minutes.
Miss Frances Dorrance, charter
member of Back Mountain Memorial
Library, and the foundation stone of
its service to the community, was
recognized, and received an ovation
from the gathering.
A popular award was greeted with
a round of applause, as Marian
Jones, retiring librarian, responded
to the reading of the number on her
ticket, and returned to her table after
receiving her transistor radio.
Others who held lucky numbers in-
cluded Mrs. John Blase, Mrs. George
Montgomery, Sue Schalm, Mrs. Shel
Evans. :
One number which went begging,
belonged to Jimmie Kozemchak, who
had left the dinner in a hurry, in
order to develop and print a picture
of the speakers table.
Jimmie said his duty had cost him
‘a transistor radio, and that hewished
he had taken a little more time over
his smorgasbord.
In speaking of the Auction, Mr.
Huttman said that the very best way
to make friends in the Back Mountain
was to work for the annual sale. That
in the seven years he had been in the
community, coming here from Long
Island, he had not made as many
contacts as he had formed last year
when he was co-chairmen, working
with general chairman Attorney
Robert Fleming.
Dick Demmy, newly elected presi-
dent of the Library, and a former
Auction chairman and co-chairman,
announced that a new librarian had
been elected, to begin her duties Au-
gust 1. Formal announcement, he
said, would be made at the May
Library Board meeting.
Dick said that he regretted deeply
the doctor’s orders which had made
it inadvisable for Mrs. Jones to con-
tinue; that the library owed her a debt
of gratitude for having assumed the
duties of librarian during the two
emergencies which had leftthe Library
without a formal head.
Mrs. Martin L. Davern, he said,
had agreed to carry the load -
3 : : : then
remain as assistant librarian.
Mrs. Paul Gross, in the absence of
an accredited librarian to head the
book booth at the auction, will be
chairman, with the help of members
of the Book Club and Friends of the
Library.
Attention was drawn to the Ford
Falcon, parked behind the club house,
the 1964 Library Auction car, for
which Ernie Gay is chairman.
Mr. Huttman thanked Mrs.
Howard Risley for the continued use
of the Barn and. grounds. For the
eighteenth year, he said, the annual
auction had been synonymous with
The Barn, and The Barn had been
synonymous with the Risleys. With-
out The Barn as a focus, the Auction
would lose its entire character.
Pronouncing the invocation was
Rev. Richard Frank, Gate of Heaven
Church; the benediction, Rev. Russell
Lawry, Dallas Methodist.
Not all committee heads have yet
been designated, but at the Auction
Kick-Off Dinner Thursday night,
Frank Huttman, general chairman,
read the major portion of the listings,
remarking that about 750 people
sould take part in one way or another,
in the actual running of the Auction.
