FARM NEWS SLOTTED FLOORS FOR CATTLE Interest it growing in slotted floor systems for all kinds of an- imals. Slats have already found a permanent place in pork production. Now, beef feeders and dairymen are trying slats. ‘ There are four main reasons for the use of slats for livestock and dairy. 1. The trend to confinement is increasing. 2. Slotted floors permit extreme- ly high concentrations of animals. 3. Slats lend themselves to con- trolled environment installations. 4. These floors reduce labor re- quirements of waste removal. Dairymen and beef feeders who are working with slotted floors find that slats 3 and one-half to 4 inches wide at the top are doing well. They should be spaced 1. inches apart for most effective self-cleaning. And the slats should also be about one half inch narrower at the bottom. Many users have liquid manure systems beneath the slats. Some also have pits deep enough for e- mergency access by tractors, Enterprising livestock and dairy producers are installing slats, More will be learned from experience, but slats are here to stay. First Yellow Crocus First yellow crocus, flanked by a snowdrop and heralded by a mourning dove, gladdened the heart cf “Aunt Jo” Norton~on Huntsville Road Tuesday morning. Right after Aunt Jo called, there was a rash of newly hatched croci. Mrs. Fred Welsh, who had covered her sprouting crocus leaves with when the snow started to go off in February, found not only yellow crocus in bloom on Sunday, but two purple jobs. . Now, bring on those big fat rob- ins, and we've got it made. y Area Gets RB Breather The Back Mountain, after a ‘sub- zero night on Friday which kept service stations busy Saturday morning, enjoyed a mild weekend, ‘with temperatures rising to the mid-fifties by Tuesday, and snow melting like magic. Your Health Ninety five per cent of pneumo- coccal pneumonia cases recover, properly treated with penicillin. Untreated pneumonia of this type is fatal in from 20 to 40 per cent of cases. Until about twenty-five years ago, pneumonia had been claiming ap- proximately one quarter of its vic- tims, and it was the sulfonomide drugs of the late 1930's that low- ered the fatality rate to about 10 percent, : ? Later, the introduction of peni- cillin and other antimicrobial drugs in the teatreatment of pneumonia, further lowered the death rate. x Pneumonia was known ‘to Hip- pocrates, more than 2,000 years ago, but its cause was not estab- lished until late inthe nineteenth century. x Pneumonia ‘of ‘the pneumococcal type is an acute bacterial infection of the lungs and comes on suddenly with ehills, fever, chest pain, cough and bloody sputum. While pneumonia occurs in ap- parently normal people there are a large number of predisposing fac- tors likely to have an effect on the outcome of ths disease and its recurrence to be identified and treated and they include antibiotic therapy, supportive measures, and treatment of complications. 7 AL Complications are estimated to occur in about 20 per cents of cases, and commonly include pleurisy and empyema. These underlying conditions need || Fewer people with pneumonia are being admitted to hospitals as most patients with this disease can now be treated effectively at home.
