THE DALLAS POST, THURSDAY, DECEMBER, 12, 1963
Violent Deeds Are Logical Outcome
Of National Bent Toward Violence
On the Sunday following the
death of President Kennedy, Wil-
liam Reid, pastor of the Carverton
Methodist Charge, spoke on the
meaning of the death of the pres-
ident.
Recognizing in the words of King
David at the death of Abner that
“a prince and great man has fal-
len,” Mr. Reid stated that the as-
sination cannot be blamed alone
on a deranged mind, but that deeds
such as this arise out of a national
temper that encourages violence.
“All too often,” he said, “we have
failed to respect the right of others
to disagree with us. Name calling
has replaced the willingness to
search for truth. National leaders
have been smeared; Mr. Eisenhower
has been called a communist; con-
servatives have been called Birch-
ers. How often we have heard
someone say, though just in jest,
‘He ought to be shot.’ Disrespect
and hatred and distrust have been
preached in the political arena, in
schools, and even in churches.
“Violent talk,”
ued, “leads to violent action. The
bombing of Negro churches, the
spitting on Mr. Stevenson, and fin-
ally, the assassination of Mr. Ken-
nedy are the inevitable results of
the irresponsible attitudes of our
day.”
Mr. Reid noted that our country
and our churches have grown strong |
because of the sacrifices of many
people. He called upon all peoples
to dedicate themselves anew to the
cause for which Mr. Kennedy and
others have given their lives in the
assurance that if they thus dedicate
themselves, God who is our Refuge
and our strength will guide our
nation through these days. Thus,
he said, the sacrifices which have
been made for us will not have
been made in vain.
