The door was open. I didn’t have to knock. “John Ruskey?” I asked. “Yes, come in, please”, the slight built man with a rumpled shock of white hair, and “What is your name ?”’ he asked. My name and occupation brought out his excla- mation, “Praise the Lord!’ Appar- ently he knew some of the phrases of religion. I was to find that he was even more at home in the re- ligious life. I sat down at the end of his kitchen table. He was about to make some coffee but I had just had lunch. On the table was a Russian Bible. Under it lay a new letter from the Ukraine which I rightly guessed was in the Russian script. It was from his daughter. He brought out a large old-fash- ioned-type Bible which had been bought from the Salvation Army. Pamphlets from different religious sects were lying about. He told me of receiving the calendar from the Orange church, and that Pastor Reid was always a welcome caller. John has lived on the road down under the hill from Orange for the past nine years. He was born back in the Czarist regime in the land which is now the Independent Ukranian Republic of the U. 8. IS. R. According to the Russian calendar his birthday is the 26th of September. By our reckon- ing it was October 9, 1892. In 1911 or 1912 he came to America leaving behind his wife, who later sent him a picture of his 5 months old baby daughter. The part of the Ukraine where he lived was at one time under Roumanian rule. The names of the towns are now chang- ed so that he hardly knows the exact location of his former home, but it was somewhere between Kiev and the Black Sea. His father died in 1930, his mo- ther 3 years later. Many upheaving events have ta- ken place since John Ruskey came to these shores a half-century ago. He wasn’t home very much of the time in ‘those early years in the old country for he had to spend so much of his time out in the hills looking after the cattle. Many Elderly Orange Man Yearns For J Rstatiyes In Russia Never Met a night he slept where ‘the cattle slept. His father was a government overseer of acres of forest and brush land. In the life of a Russian pea- sant there was but little money made or spent. The soil was com- pelled to provide life’s barest ne- cessities. The flocks and herds were | the raw material for meat and cloth- ing. The Russian woman knew how to make the clothing and prepare the food. Even. though it was a long distance to the nearest Ortho- dox church the people walked. Wor- ship, Bible reading and study were worth the journeys. John’s formal schooling was scant but his intel- ligence was far from meager. When he came to the U.S. he found work in the mines. After about 40 years in the mines the asthma forced him out. Lately John Bes been trying to make contact with his people of long ago. Many had been killed in the wars. Especially he wanted to find his daughter whom he had never seen and was still living. Eventually one of his twin sisters was contacted who wrote him about the rest. His daughter in now a great-grandmother! She wrote him, “TI don’t know you and you don’t know me,” but added, “Father, I want to see you.” Of course John Ruskey is a deep- ly religious man, but I prefer the term “spiritual.” He has done con- siderable intelligent Bible reading. He talks as one familiar with its stories. In speaking about the Old Testament stories and the words of the prophets he exclaimed, “We need some prophets now!” He had addressed me as “Brother Gilbert”, and then suddenly apolo- gized seeming to fear I might not like that term but he said in Christ we are all brothers, and I agreed. I liked the term! When I was getting ready to leave he asked for prayer. During my petitions he made fre- quent devout ejaculations as if to underline what I was saying. Here is a man who has known poverty, hard work, tragedy, separ-. ation from family as few of ug ever know it. Yet he is without enmity or bitterness, but instead, where along the road of life, he has come to know the real consolations and strength which Christ gives. Here’s Harrison Jamie McMoore, From a skid he has troubles galore. This wreck is a nifty, / McMoore was not thrifty... He should have bought tire chains before! / PREVENT THOSE WINTER DRIVING WOES The Safe Winter Driving League presents this winter driving tip from the National Safety Council: “Tests show that rein- forced tire chains cut stopping distance on snow and ice more effectively than anything else, and give from four to five times as much traction as regular tires without chains.” Don’t be a traffic blocker—always carry tire chains for severe snow and VV VV VV VV VY VY VVVVVYVVYVYVYY ~ Ed Fielding’s Shavertown : 6 E.
