THE DALLAS POST, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1963
PASTER HUGHES
This Sunday, Church of Christ in
Sweet Valley is observing its centen-
nial with special afternoon services
at 2:15, following a congregational
dinner at 4:15.
Morning services will be as usual,
with Bible School at 10 and morning
worship at 11, says William Hughes,
minister.
There will be congregational sing-
ing and special music during the
afternoon. Guest speakers are for-
mer ministers, men immediately
preceding ‘the present minister in
the Church of Christ pulpit, Burl
Brinn, now pastor of Brandywine
Church of Christ, and Donald J. Wel-
don, pastor of First Christian Church,
Fritzgerald, Ga.
Actually, the church is older than
100 years, because elders were ap-
pointed in March of 1862, at a time
when volunteers were donning blue
uniforms and marching to the de-
fence of the Union from this area.
And an earlier record shows baptisms
in 1861.
A building committee was formed
in April of 1862, consisting of P. C.
Callendar, S. A. Edwards, and Sam-
uel Edwards. Names of charter mem-
Hat Show and Card Party plann-
ed by St. Theresa's Altar and Ro-
sary Society for September 25 will
feature Mrs. Edward Chukinas,
Mrs. Margaret Bednar, Mrs. Thomas
Tagila, Mrs. Edward Zaboski, Mrs.
John Carey and Mrs. Edward Kups-
tas as models.

bers are mot available.
A church is not an edifice, but a
corporate entity. The seed was sown
| several years earlier than existing
records show, as material was cop-
ied from an earlier book, not mow
in existence, and it is known that
Pastor Frantz preached at the school-
house where the congregation met.
well in advance of laying of plans
to build a church.
A great meeting at which many
persons were baptized occurred in
1885, at which time Michael Edwards
and Joseph Edwards were named
elders.
Ome of the former ministers was
Rev. Charles Frick’s uncle, of the
same name. Rev. Charles Frick pas-
tor of Huntsville Christian Church for
many years, and verging on 85, is
now at Benton Christian Church.
Virgil Wallace, Retired in Berwick;
Carl ‘Alexander, Christian Church,
Altoona; E, J. Waterstripe, Retired
and now in Shickshinmy, are on the
list of former ministers.
The oldest members in point of
time are Frank amd Lena Foss, who
joined in 1893. The oldest in point
of years is Mrs. Elsie Wesley, now
93. ha
Many years ago the original
church edifice was
ure. The original building was rem-
iniscent of New England, amd more
especially Connecticut, of which this
area was once a part, Severely plain
in its white clapboards and simple
belfry, it stood foursquare to the
four winds of heaven, one of the
original churches of the Back Moun-
tain, rooted solidy in The Book.
The church is justly proud of the
fine men who have gone from its
doors to preach. Sterling Meade is
pastor of Church of Christ, Williams-
port; Kenneth Meade, Wheaton, Md.;
Richard Besteder, Bristol, Va.; Joel
Rood, Strawberry Plains, Tenn.
Preparing for the ministry at John-
son Bible College are Wayne Joce-
lyn, in the senior class; Robert An-
drews, in the freshman class, leaving
on Suday for Kmoxville, Tenn.
