Gunsmith, Expert
With the death of Albert L. May,
another super-craftsman of =the
Back Mountain has closed his books,
and people from over the state who
had left with him their treasured
guns for repair or restoration, will
be obliged to seek elsewhere for the
kind of work which is exceedingly
hard to come by.
Each time Mr. May took on a job
of gunsmithing, he studied it care-
fully, and made of it a true work
of art. He could restore a gun-
stock which had been through the
Civil War until it was sturdy and
fit for a collector’s display, or he
could reproduce it so cunningly that
it kept its antique flavor.
Carving the stock was a special
delight. Bears and trees and land-
scape emerged from the black wal-
nut as delicate chips fell from his
deft fingers, and the carving took
shape.
He had the soul of an artist, and
like most artists he accumulated
few worldy goods. Each finished
piece told him again that his work
was good, and he parted with it
reluctantly.
He inlaid his stocks sometimes
with mother-of-pearl or exotic
woods. It was the wood for which
he had a true inner feeling . .
though he also engraved.

on steel. And it was the feel of
the wood that he loved when he
repaired a violin.
On Wednesday afternoon he died,
fatally stricken with a heart attack
while holding a half finished gun-
stock in his hand. He was seventy-
five years old.
Folks will miss Mr. May. He en-
joyed visiting with his friends, and
he delighted to walk the Noxen-
Tunkhannock Road, greeting friends
as he passed. i
Since 1918, he lived in Noxen,
where he was employed first by
the Mosser Tannery, and later, in
the early thirties, operated an auto
repair shop.
He was born at Bowmans Creek,
son of the late (Charles and Emily
Sorber May.

former Elsie Reinhard; sons, Law-
rence E. and George A., who have
lived in Idaho since World War II;

Barre. A sister, Gertrude Thomas
died some years ago.
Services were conducted Satur-
day afternoon from the Nulton Fu-
neral Home, Rev. Wesley Kimm,
pastor of St. Luke's Lutheran
Church in Noxen, officiating, Burial
was at Orcutt Cemetery.
