Farm Calendar
Costs Increase — Marketing costs
now account for over half the retail
price of farm-produced foods, says
Harold Neigh, Penn State extension
consumer marketing specialist. He
believes these costs will continue
to rise. Although tramsportation
costs will be fairly stable, many
other costs such as labor, taxes,
advertising, and packaging materials
will continue to go up.
Light Up—An effective farmyard
lighting system is an aid to safety
and comvenience. Penn State ex-
tension agricultural engineers sug-
gest a combination of yard lights on
poles and flood lights located over
entramces to farm buildings.
Penns Woods Notebook |
You know it is interesting to take
hikes into the woods and visit with
mother mature’s wild animals and
birds. I had the pleasure recently
of going on a hike to visit a beaver
dam. The dam is located up in
the mountains of a place called
Nordmont, Pennsylvania in Ly-
coming County, just about a ome
and a half hour ride from Dallas.
The beaver is a interesting animal
to study.
Men were not the first ballilers
of dams. Beavers built dams long
before men did. They are very
clever engineers, .
Beavers build their homes in
ponds, making dams to hold back,
the water. There may be as many |
as 25 or 30 beaver homes in one
pond formed by a beaver dam.
Making a beaver colony a success
is the way that they work together
to build their dams. Together they
pile up logs and twigs, weighing
them down with stomes, and fasten-
ing them in place with mud. They
then pat the mud into the cracks
with their noses and feet, working
on a dam until it is so solid and
high that very little water can get
through it or over it.
Their homes look like big piles of
branches out in a pond. It is really
a one room house with doors in the
floor, Beavers must swim down
into the water to get in or out of
their residence. To get the neces-
sary materials the beavers cut
down tres. They belong to a group
of gnawing mammals, or rodents,
using the bark for food. They store
logs and branches in the water near
their homes, using stones on the
branches to hold them down.
Poplar trees make the best food

for beavers. To cut down a tree a
beaver gnaws around and around
it. He works until a deep ring is
cut around the tree. When the
tree shivers, the beaver slaps the
ground with its tail. The slap
warns the others that the tree is
about to fall.- Then down it comes.
After it has fallen many beavers
work together cutting it into pieces.
They have four long sharp teeth
that are like chisels. Their front
feet are small and unwebbed, hind
feet are large and webbed. A
beaver is dark brown above, pale
chocolate below. with a broad flat
and scaly tail, from 10 to 15 inches
long. Total length is about 42
inches and average weight 40 to 50
pounds.
Some beavers in the pond may
{homes in the bank are long tun-
nels. During the winter beavers
stay im their homes most of the
time, leaving only to get food.
They have beautiful fur. To get
their fur we have killed far too
many beavers for our own good.
While they are building dams to
help themselves, they are helping
us, too. The dams hold back water,
prevent floods, and keep our land
from being washed away. The soil
they save for wus is much more
valuable, and worth more than the
fur.
Accompanying me to the beaver
dam at Nordmont was Mr. Morris
King, Al Pace and Skip Shaver. If
you have any questions. that you
would like answered in this paper

Corn Surplus Lower
The U. S. Department of Agri-
culture’s quarterly report show a
reduction in surplus of corn. Om
July 1, stocks were reported at
2,118,498,000 bushels, the lowest
since 1958.
The combined total of all feed
grains was 11 percent lower this
year than last.
The reversal of the feed grain
build up results from better balance
between grain products and con-
sumption reports D. Richard Wen-
