By: Jim Hopple
If the best protection and use of
our natura] resources is to be main-
tained in the future, it will be
essential that there be more public
imterest and support for conserva-
tion in the communities of a state.
Many of our young people are grow-
ing up without adequate under-
standing of comservation needs. This
can be remedied if we help in form-
ing and developing effective pro-
grams of conservation education.
Every available publicity and
educational medium should be used
to stimulate an interest and desire
for good conservation programs.
This cam be done by radio, televi-
sion, newspapers, speakers and well
placed posters and will transmit and
create interest in 'the project. I
might add that conservation clubs
for young people are very impor-
tant, and no community should be
without one. I am happy to say
that I have been helping in this
project by talking to groups and
on radio, besides writing this col-
umn each week. My big job is to
start a Junior Comservation Club in
our area. I hope with your help
that this project can and will be
done.
I may add that, being a member
of the National Council of Junior
Outdoorsmen, I would be happy to
talk to your youth group.
If you are interested in starting
a conservation rod and gun club,
drop me a post card or phone 674-
3529. In a club stich as this one,
we young people with the help of
our state fish and game depart-
ments would learn more and work
with them. Speakers and films are
available. © We would also become
better hunters and fishermen. This
and more is what a good conserva-
tion or conservation and rod and
gun club can give to young people,
and if there are some adults who
would like to help me in this proj-
ect please write or phone me. If
any clubs are interested in helping,
I would be glad to hear from their
club also.
Most comservation minded people
are already convinced that waste
and depletion of natural resources
constitute serious threats to the well
being of our state. More serious
thought and attention is meeded.
This is our greatest challenge, the
need for more conservation minded
people.
Natura] resources are basic to our
food, shelter, recreation and every-
thing we require to live. This can
be done by people working together.
Let me hear from you by a post
card or letter and send it to Penns
Woods Notebook, Box 408, Dallas,
Pa., 18612.
