Two weeks ago I had visited Valley Crest to see Elsa Schneider and to learn that she was in serious condition. I was dis- turbed that she had been hogpital- ized and no one informed. ‘' When she was at Laurytown, such was not the case. I renewed a prior re- quest that amy change be reported promptly. Last Sunday evening a call came that she was eritical and at 5 a.m. the word that her suffering was at last ended. Then began the task of saving the tired earthly remains from the dissecting knives of a state laboratory and laying it to rest. beside the husband whom she loved. 4 No one would assume responsi- bility. The DPA said it had no funds to which she was entitled, the county held itself not respom- sible, A call to several undertakers brought response (rom Kenneth Gray of Kniffen’s, who joined with me and agreed to give the poor soul a Christian burial. I mentioned that Jack Shepherd of Fern Knoll had supplied a grave for her late husband, telling us at that time that one would be reserved for his widow. Mr. Shepherd again opened his heart. Mr. Gray claimed the body. One of my associates, herself bearing grave problems, made the first contribution to a burial fund, several more added their small share, Mrs. Puterbaugh, a former kindly neighbor of the Schneiders joined in the cause and a prominent attorney, active im many com- munity projects offered his financial aid. The viewing was held on Tuesday evening, only a handful gathering to pay their last respects, but on the plain casket rested a sheaf of asters, sent by her former neigh- bors, sympathetic to Mrs. Puter- baugh’s call.” I was pleased that Rev. Charles Gilbert, a fellow cor- respondant amd chaplain at Valley .| Crest came to bid her farewell amd offer his services. She would have appreciated his continued interest. Pastor C. Humbert, Wilkes-Barre a Lutheran clergyman, had volun- teered earlier to perform the last’ rites for the unfortumate woman. It was as she would have wished it.
