PARK FREE IN REAR orge McCutcheon, and William L.| Larson, Robert C. Dungey Robert: the 91st birthday of the lady who has ultimate charge of the Risley home—Granny. “Mrs. ‘H. H. Zeiser, as she signs her name, is Myra Risley’s mother, wife of the late Harry H. Zeiser, superintendent of schools of Wilkes- Barre. Although she doesn’t get around as much as she used to, dis- counting her yearly trips to Florida, Granny has reached legendary status in this community. She divides her time about half- and half between good old-fashioned work and the verbal narrative, and constantly = amazes people. It is to long life. Born in Wilkes-Barre to John E. Smith and Mrs. Smith, who died of tuberculosis at childbirth, Mar- garet was one of three children. She attended public schools and Wyoming Seminary. John Smith remarried, and the family moved neighbors were the Zeisers. were childhood sweethearts, and, as it, happens in stories, Mr, Zeiser returned home, a graduate of Bloomsburg and Lafayette College, and they married. When Mr. Zeiser died in 1934, with Myra and Howard. Another daughter, Mrs. Leighton R. Scott, lives. in Easton, and a son Bruce lives in Providence. Granny is pictured above, unbe- knownst to her, picking lillies. Her day begins just as yesterday's ended, worrying about today’s meals, the welfare of her cats, dogs, and parakeet (“Good morning, ma- ma.” “Good morning, Pretty Boy’), ‘or transporting screendoors and sports coats to a better place. H. H. ZEISER ‘ Tt is fitting that opening day of the ‘17th. Library Auction is also | eats a huge breakfast. (‘‘Always | Granny is short in stature, but eat a good breakfast”, she daily admonishes the coffee-gulpers if she can catch them.) She drinks about six cups of coffee a day, fol- lows no diet, and, !although she doesn’t eat much the other meals, eats anything she darn well pleases when she does. In her youth she was a very good painter, hooked rugs, and still works on her own clothes. In later years she developed a taste for reading, one of her favorite novels being a recent paperback on the courtship of Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Lincoln. She likes love stories. Her eyesight, corrected, is excel- | lent, and she hears certain tones— those that she isn’t supposed to, very well, but she can’t hear what she doesn’t want to, at all. Granny is famous for her mental compendium of stories, local his- | tory, and advice, and if you don’t | know the background of any such story, she'll tell you that too. She is completely unconcerned with her birthdays, or anything else | that pertains to herself only. From an objective analysis of one re- porter, “who happens ‘to ‘be her grandson, but who could be anyone she could “do something for,” Granny has the most angelic nature he has ever seen. She is completely absorbed in the lives of those around her, and will not let you go until you are stuffed with food, advice, and benediction. For once, sit still, Granny, and enjoy your birthday.
