Carverton
Charles Fine, California, formerly
of Carverton paid visits recently to
the Kasabas, Cooks and Scobles,
former neighbors. His visit to the
East was on account of his sister’s
serious surgery, Mrs. Malvina Faltz.
She spent some time in the Wyo-
ming Valley Hospital but has now
returned home.
Mt. Zion
Tuffy returned from his walk
with Catherine recently’ to report
great excitement along the road
near Stockers, Tuffy pulled to the
roadside, following his nose, scemt-
ing some truant cows off in the
brush. The Ralph Swan family
came along and also cattleman

with Tuffy and his drover clear in
‘the rear, and several delayed cars
in between. The runaways were
soon herded into Dick Lewis’ ,re-
cently vacated calf corral. I asked
Ralph Sands how he enjoyed his
recent trip out west, and he said
the flight out was wonderful, the
cattlemen’s convention was fine,
but he had sinus trouble all the
while he was there, so he didn’t
commend the climate.
Sunday Jume 30 we drove to
Maine, N. Y., to attend the service
at the Federated Church where I
was pastor for eight and a half
years before: coming ‘to Pittston.
While pastor there I assisted at
the ordination of ome of the young
men of the Congregational part of
the Federation. Now he was ‘to
preach at his home church on a va-
cation Sunday. We wouldn't miss
hearing him. His sermon was prac-

When we got home we found a here from Philadelphia two years

ing ‘they had been sitting for a
couple of hours on our porch en-
joying the country air. We phoned
them at West Pittston and ‘told
them to come back up the moun-
tain for a visit. Which they did,
and we all enjoyed it. We also
found out that the substitute rural
carrier for the last few days in Joe
Clifford’s place is a neighbor of the
Banks family om Fourth Street,
Vincent Argenio,
On the night of the Fourth of
July we had callers from West
Pittston, Sheldon and Sybil Burkel
and son Philip, amd Sybil’s mother
Mrs. Beatrice Webb.
Ever get a letter from Santa Claus
in mid-summer? ‘Well, I did on
July 5. It came directly from
Santa's Workshop, North Pole, N.Y.
He writes: “At the present time we
are extremely busy. It is a common
occurrence to greet 4 to 6 thousand
people a day.” This man with a
luxuriant white beard really grow-
ing out of his skin also takes the
parts of Old King Cole, the Bishop,
St. Nicholas and the First Wise
Man. Santa Claus’ aged mother is
one of my “parishioners” at Valley
Crest a sweet little white haired
lady who is very happy and cordial
in greeting me.
FROM CULVER HILL WAY
Cows just don’t like the smell of
bear! When they smell a bear they
let out an awful bellow. Stuart
Aitkin was telling me that he heard
this unearthly bellowing from cattle
over on land leased for pasture. It
was unusual and persistent. So he
went over ‘to where there's a creek
and there in the mud were large
