Some eighty Dallas area people,
many of whom are shown here with
Civil Defense and school officials,
just prior to receiving their certifi-
cates, graduated from the local
course Tuesday night, last week.
Dr. Mellman, ' superintendant of
schools, spoke to the final gathering
at Dallas Senior High auditorium,
emphasizing the need for extended
interest in family and’ individual |
Brea People Graduate From Civil Defense Course
{ES
protection.
He also reviewed the school plans
for disaster warning and pupil trans-
portation.
Local Civil Defense leaders were
on hand to see the graduates re-
ceive their certificates.
Instructors in the course were Al-
fred M. Camp and Gerald Stinson,
teahers in Dallas School District.
Col. Leon Beisel, representing Col.
John Jeter
(Continued from 1—A)
his quiet, efficient manner are
acquainted. :
Mr. Jeter is the mainstay of the
borough building, and all business |
is channeled through him, includ-
ing answering the phone and super-
vising zoning and building, which
are not necessarily in his line.
He feels that too many officials
and municipal workers today place
emphasis solely on the money in a
job, and says he has enjoyed doing
relatively unrewarded work simply
for its own sake. He commended
the Council for a like attitude.
Mr. Jeter says he ‘hasn't done
so much in the way of community
service by comparison. Guy Walk-
er, in whose office he worked for
a while, has been city engineer in
Wilkes-Barre for well over fifty
years. John Jeter was at hig testi-
monial dinner.
A member of Prince of Peace
Church, Mr. Jeter is also a mem-
ber of George M. Dallas Lodge from'
which he received his fifty-year pin,
and belongs to Shrine and the
Templars. 4
Asked if he preferred to keep
out of political mix-ups, Mr. Jeter
takes on a quiet smile, and tells
a few stories of such confusion as
he narrowly escaped. ‘But,” he
observes, “I handled a lot of WPA
projects as a matter jof course.”
In those days much} engineering
was WPA work.
Probably no one will ever know
how much John Jeter has done for
Dallas, and if it’s upito him, he!
won't tell you.
No one is more eminently quali-
fied for the Wilkes College award
than he is, and if Mr. Jeter feels it
sufficient reward, as he would, he
shouldn’t get away so easily.
He should know that Dallas is
really grateful, too.
Make Survey
Water Supply
Lack of water for fire-fighting,
lack of adequate water supply from
present sources for an expanding
population, and pinpointing of areas
which cannot develop unless more
water is available, is the subject of
a recent survey of the Back Moun-
tain made by Luzerne County
Planning Commission.
The longterm forecast takes the
region to 1980, when popu-lation is |
expected to reach 28,500, an in-|
crease of approximately 10,000
from 1960 census figures, with cen- |
ters of population located as at!
present, from Trucksville through
Idetown.

Burnt Trucker
Still Serious #
A Trucksville man, Thomas
Hughes, 42, remains in serious con-
dition in Nesbitt Hospital where he
was transferred last week, follow-
ing his miraculous escape from
flaming death in a truck he was
driving early in the morning of
May 17.
Pain from his burns is such that
he must be kept under sedation.
Hughes quite recently hired by
Mathers Construction Company,
was driving a tanker filled with
hot asphalt from Philadelphia when
a large shepherd dog ran across
his path on the Pennsylvania Turn-
pike near the Norristown exit.
Swerving to miss the dog, the
local man, felt the load begin to
rock. In a matter of seconds, the
huge tanker tipped over, spraying
hot asphalt across the highway and
setting the carrier on fire. Flaming!
gasoline from the exploding engine
filled the cab.
Hughes was flung out of the ve-
hicle, sliding across the width of
the road on his left side. He threw
himself down on the bank neatiily
in an attempt to put out his flam-
ing clothing, unaware that burni
asphalt had poured into the i
By the time he had torn off his
blazing garments, he had suffered
first and second degree burns to
the back and arms, severe brush
burns of the face, and puncture
wounds of the head. He was rushed
to the Norristown Hospital,
