‘Swoyerville Downs Dallas 10-3,
Lake-Lehman 6-4 In School Tourney
Three Teams Finish With 8-2 Record;
Extra Base Hits Provide Punch For Sailors
Dallas, Lake-Lehman and Swoyer-
ville finished the season with 8-2
records in the Western Division of
the schoolboy ranks and entered the
17th annual high school baseball
tourney to determine the Wyoming
Valley championship at Kingston
Stadium, and among them, Swoyer-
ville came out on top.
Swoyerville and Lake-Lehman
tangled im the opening game with
the Sailors winning 6-4 behind the
five-hit pitching of Joe Kovaleski,
who bested Don Malak.
Dallas and Swoyerville went at it !
Monday and paced by the bat of
John Romanchick, the Sailors again
behind the four-hit pitching of Kova-
leski, trounced Dallas 10-3. Roman-
chick cracked a single, triple and
homerun.
Swoyerville-Dallas
Staked to an early three run lead
in the first inning due to two walks
and two errors the Sailors had little
trouble in turning back the local
Dallas club 10-3. 4
E. Suda walked to start the game
and was sacrificed to 2nd by A.
Suda. A single by Romanchick put
runners at the corners. After Ro-
manckick stole 2nd, Kovaleski was
intentionally walked, loading the
bases. Kraynak then hit a towering
drive to deep left center with Ba-
tory making the catch, Suda scoring
and Romanchick taking 3rd. When
Kovaleski tried to steal second Gos-
art threw the ball into center. and
the two rumners scored as Kerpo-
vich let the ball go by him in center.
Dallas had a chance to close the
gap in the bottom of the first after
Lockard was cafe on an error, and
Brominski clouted a double in the
corner in left. But Kovaleski got
out of the jam by getting Kerpovich
to ground out to first and Martin
flied to right. '
An error by Cobb with two down
in the second again started Paltri-
neri on his downfall.
Sadusky had opened the inning
with a single and the next two hit-
ters popped up before Cobb booted
a grounder by E. Suda. A Suda
followed with a double off the left
field fence, plating Sadusky. Left-
hand hitting Romanchick then
caught a Paltrineri pitch and blast-
ed it over the right field fence for
a homer and three runs. The ball
cleared the fence at the 350-foot
mark. : |
Swoverville scored two more in
the third after two were out. Kray-
nak opened with a s'ngle, but the
next two pooped up before Yurko
lined a single to center which got
bv Kerpovich scoring Kraynak and
Yurko taking third. Holup then
lined a single up the middle ‘send-
ine Yurko homs for a 9-0 lead.
» Dallas scored twice in the fourth
without getting a hit. Martin
walked and was forced at second.
Batory followed with a walk and
both runners advanced as Cobb
grounded to first. Paltrineri fol-
lowed with a grounder to short
which Yurko booted allowing both
runners to score. is

The first inning of this contest
was about the same story as the
Dallas game. Errors paved the way
for three unearned runs.
Kovaleski bested Malak in a keen
hill battle in this one. He picked
up his seventh win, while Malak
finished the season with a 5-2 slate.
'E. Suda started the game by
reaching first on an error by Ells-
worth. A. Suda then followed with
a bunt, but Kunkle dropped Malak’s
perfect throw. After TRomanchick
fanned, Kovaleski was safe on an

the bottom of the third. Kovaleski
started with a single, Kraynak fol-
lowed with a single, and both run-
ners moved up when Rinko sacri-
ficed. Sadusky was intentionally
passed to load the sacks, but the
strategy backfired when Yurko hit
a base-clearing double to give the
Sailors a 6-1 lead.
The Knights got to Kovaleski in
the sixth when Gray opened with
a walk. Rogers followed with a
single; Gray taking third. Gray
crossed the plate as Sorber ground-
ed out. Ellsworth then hit to sec-
ond and they tried to cut down
Rogers at the plate, but the throw
was late. After Palmer grounded
out, Keiper singled home Ellsworth
with the final marker.
