Franklin Searfoss, 88
Released By Death
Franklin A. Searfoss, 88, was re-
leased Tuesday morning from pain-
ful illness, dying at the home of his
daughter, Mrs. John Baer Sr. at Hun.
lock Creek, where he had lived for
over eleven years, moving there from
Harveys Lake.
Burial will be in Kocher Cemetery
Friday following services conducted
by Rev. Fred Moore and Rev. Thomas
Bonham from Nulton Funeral Home
at 2 p.m. Friends may call this eve-
ning 7 to 9. Grandsons will act as
pallbearers. He will lie beside his
wife . Elizabeth DeHaven Searfoss,
who died twenty years ago.
Born at Blakeslee, son of the late
Jacob and Elemenia Altemose Sear-
foss, he moved ‘to Harveys Lake
when eighteen years old, working for
a time in the Albert Lewis sawmill,
then for fifty years at the Harveys
Lake Supply Store at Alderson. The
family retained membership in. the
Lutheran Church at Blakeslee
though the children attended Alder-
son Methodist Church.
Intensely home-loving, Mr. Sear-
foss made a beauty spot of his gar-
den, and in later years, of his daugh-
ter’'s garden at Hunlock Creek.
He was the last of i1ine ‘children.
A brother Francis, Fern Ridge, died

Surviving ‘are four daughters:
Mrs. Harvey Kitchen, Idetown; Mrs.
Sarah Panzia Philadelphia; Mrs. La- |
vina Barry, Sayre; and Mrs. Baer, |
Hunlocks Creek; -three sons: Arthur;

Was Born In Trucksville
Mrs. Claudia. Montross, 45; a na-
tive of Trucksville, and for the past
fourteen years resident of Blooms-
burg, died Sunday morning at Jef-
ferson Hospital, following several
months of illness:
She spent her girlhood in Trucks-
ville, where she attended Trucksville
grade school, and graduated from
Wyoming Seminary and College Mis.
ericordia. She taught school at Up-
per Darby for several years.
Following marriage to Norton F.
Montross, who died in 1950, she
lived in Tunkhannock for several
years. After his death, she operated
Parlor City Cafe in Bloomsburg for
fourteen years.
She was a former member of
Trucksville Methodist Church.
Surviving are: a daughter, Claudia,
Bloomsburg, and her mother, Dr.
Marjorie W, Jones, Minneapolis,

She was buried at Mt. Greenwood
| Cemetery yesterday afternoon, fol-
lowing services conducted by Rev.
| Robert Germond from the Snowdon
| Panteal Home in Kingston.

On Saturday, May 18, Mormons |
from all over the Northeastern
part of the United States will ga-
ther at a marker by the Susque-
hanna River mear Harmony about
sixty miles from Dallas, to com-
memorate an event which took
place 134 years ago.
Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery
had come to this place as the guests
of Isaac Hale, Joseph's father-in-
law. While translating from the
writings on the metal plates now
known as ‘the Book of Mormon,
they discovered that baptism for
the remission of sins was mentioned
several times. Realizing that con-
siderable confusion existed concern-
ing the doctrine of baptism, they
were prompted to pray to the Lord
for additional light on the subject.

On Susquehanna 134 Years Ago

either route 11 or the interstate
route 81 and turning to the right
