THE DALLAS POST, THURSDAY, MAY 16, 1963
Exchange Student
Nancy Sieber, Rotary Exchange
Student in Holland, enchants her
readers with more tales of life in
the Netherlands in such a manner
that one, would like to visit this
quaint country.
November 13, 1962
Dear Mom and Dad,
On Friday at 2:30, I took the
train to Gouda. It is a one and a
half hour ride. I was in a com-
partment with a long seat for four
people. Some soldiers got on at
Zwolle.
I had to write a speech for Rotary.
I am beginning to think in Dutch
now. It is funny how much easier
it is to think in a language and then
translate it.
Upon arriving we went to our
families. Mine had two girls, 22
and 19 and a boy, 12. The oldest
girl played in a concert on Friday
night so we went to hear her. Then
we visited the town hall and met
the mayor.
It was hard to believe that the
building was older tham America.
It was built in the 1400’s. We also
went to St. Jan’s Church which is
the most famous in the world.
really magnificent and the enor-
mous stained glass windows are gut
of this world, so realistic. You can
really see the muscles and shadows
clearly on each picture. Really
breathtaking.
After dinner we visited a nursery,
and at 5:30 there was a'dance with
sons and daughters of Rotary. We
ate constantly. At 8 p.m. we had
supper and danced again till 12. It
was fantastic. Every 15 minutes
they served ice cream, pastries and
cookies,
On Sunday we took an'auto trip
through the small towns, had cof-
fee in an old cafe and dinner at a
Boat Club. We had such a wonder-
ful time that it was hard to say
. | goodbye, but when I got back to
Kingma’s, it was like coming home.
It is all so wonderful. I can write
and I will bring pictures home but
I am mever going to be able to show
you what it is really like mor what
I found so fantastic about the Neth-
erlands.
The people have a certain air
about things. You just have ‘to live
with them to see it. I hope I can
bring you back some day not as a
tourist but as a Dutch girl.
Monday, I gave my Rotary speech
to 35 members.\ It was just like
talking to my family. I told them
about school, church and my family.
They were most interested in Tom,
our military service and the Peace
Corps. Here the boys go into the
service at age 20. iY
The door bell just rang and guess
what. ‘A florist package for me. In
it were six long stemmed carnations
from the Rotary Club. I guess they
liked my speech. My very first flow=-

December 2, 1962
Princess Wilhemina died and the
till she is buried. So all parties and
Santa Claus festivities have been
cancelled except for small children.
On Saturday morning, I was at a
Xmas party for poor children with
Tanto J’ullie, who is head of the
Council for the school where they
go. They were seven months to six
years,
We may have Santa here at the
house on December 5, but nothing
public. My big prom which was to
be December 8 was cancelled be-
cause that is the day the Princess
will be buried. If that hasn’t caused
a fuss. She sure died at the wrong
time of year. So the Prom was
moved up to December 13, because

The girls had all asked boys from
tary and a lot of them cannot come
now because it is going to be in the
middle of the week.
One of my friends; whose father
is a noble, asked a boy out of Ar-
nem and now he camnot come.
All of a sudden I thought of a
bright idea and called John Perry
in Amsterdam and asked him to
come as her escort. He said he
would be happy to attend and he is
to stay at my friend’s home.
First we are going to have dimner
at her place, then go to a play, then
to a dance at school. Afterwards
we will come back to the Vegter’s
and have an after party with 20
people. I am really looking forward
to it. I am going with a real nice
boy, tall, blond and blue eyes.
